Arthur E. Hertel, husband of Mrs. Helen Caredy Her tel, 2440 Fourth street, Trenton. Sgt. Hertel, a member of the 36th Texas division of the Seventh Army was killed in action, December 14. The award was given for his heroism in defending a strategically important position against over whelming opposition on December 14. the dispatch from the Front reads. Trenton to Top Clothing Quota Trenton is out to exceed its quota of seven tons of clothing for the United National clothing collection now underway, according to Rus sell J. Barrow, local chairman. April 15 to 22 has been set as “clean out your closet week,” Bar row announced and continued with the request for all housewives, to cooperate in getting clothing ready for the drive and deposit it at the nearest village col lection depot. Corp. James L. Nagel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee W. Nagel, of Trenton, has been awarded the Sil ver Star for gallantry* in action against the Nazis, January 5. News of the citation was re ceived by his parents in a letter this week. During an enemy artillery bar rage in the fighting for Luxem bourg. Nagel voluntarily exposed himself to the enemy’s fire by pro ceeding to examine the area into which the rounds of ammunition were falling and to assist in obtain ing shell reports. The information he obtained was responsible for the neutralizing of the enemy battery and the action occured when any interruption in the operations of Nagel’s division’s artillery would have seriously ham pered support of the division's ef forts. Corporal Nagel is with General George Patton’s third army. A member of the field artillery he was sent overseas last June and is now located in Germany. A graduate of Trenton Slocum- Truax high school, he has been in« service since January 22, 1943. Raymond G. Bates and the council failed to come to an agreement again at Monday night’s meeting. Bates’ appointments of Henry L. Ulrich for fire chief and Clayton L. Williams as police chief were vetoed by the council last week.
