Public Schools
Hold Special
Memorial Program
Memorial day will be appropriate
ly observed this year in all public
schools of the city. So many of
the brothers and fathers of many
of the students are in service that
there is a deep appreciation of the
meaning of the day in the hearts
of all children. All elementary
schools will have programs in which
the children themselves take the
most important parts. A typical
program is that of the J. B. Ford
Elementary school. Their program
consists of the following numbers:
Flag Salute: America; Reading,
“The Meaning of Memorial Day”,
a 5A student; America the Beauti
ful; Poem, Memorial Day, 5B stu
dents; Gettysburg Address, 6B stu
dent; God Bless America; In Flan

much to Dean during his high
school days. Later on when the
YMCA was organised here, he be
came a Charter Member and un
doubtedly would have continued to
enjoy an active part and a keen
interest in its program. He looked
forward eagerly to the time when
there would be a complete YMCA
program in Wyandotte. Therefore,
we felt that we would like to estab
lish a living memorial in the
YMCA, dedicated to the youth of
the community.”
By action of the Committee of
Management and with the appro
val of Mr. and Mrs. Locker, it was
decided to use this Memorial Fund
for furnishings and equipment for
a craft shop in the YMCA building,
The basement of the present build
ing will be used temporarily as a
craft shop and tools and equipment
will be purchased from the Mem
orial Fund. Then, when anew
YMCA building is erected on this
property, the tools and equipment
can be moved into the larger craft
rooms that will be in the new build
ing so that the craft shop in the
YMCA will be a permanent project
growing out of the Dean Locker
Memorial Fund.
This Memorial Fund has already
received other contributions. A
group of neighbors and other
friends of the Locker family who
knew their son, Dean, most of his
life, contributed a substantial sum
to the Fund as a token of their
friendship for Dean and his par
ents. The Phalanx Young Men’s
Group of the local YMCA, through
their adult advisor, John C. Kre
ger, contributed to the fund in
memory of Dean because he was an
active member of this young men’s
group before going into military
service. The Service Snooper group,
the young people’s group of the
YMCA, at a recent meeting voted
an appropriation of their funds to
add to the Memorial Fund.
