Serves On Carrier ABOARD THE USS RUDYERD BAY—Robert Edward Nowland. seaman, second class. USN. 319 Clinton, served aboard this escort carrier as she topped off three , major Pacific operations with her cambaign at Okinawa. The "Rugged Rudy.” as she is called by her crew, helped smash Jap shore installations at Okinawa and her squadron pilots shot down ; six enemy planes. Her first mission was to ferry planes to Espiritu Santo and the Majuro Islands in the Marshalls. Then she returned to the states, picked up her first air squadron and headed for the war in the 1 Pacific. * At Iwo Jima she sent her planes in support of our landing forces ; for the first time. During the invasion of the Phil ippines, the Rudyerd Bay protected the fleet oil tankers from enemy air and submarine attacks and rode out the roaring typhoon that sank three U. S. destroyers. Last January the Rugged Rudy cruised into the China seas to pro tect tankers which were carrying , oil for Admiral Halsey’s 3rd Fleet, then striking against French Indo- Chinese ports. The Rudyerd Bay, named for a ! small bay in Alaska, is commanded by Capt. Curtis S Smiley, USN. Lewis has followed the long route from Australia to New Guinea and to the Philippines for thirty months with the 411th Engineer Special Shop Bn. and says that moving around so much may be fine for other soldiers but it doesn't make him very happy. "No sooner.'’ says Set. Lewis, "do we erect our latrines, mess-halls, wash-rooms and showers, level off the camp-site, spread a few hun dred truck-loads of gravel, build roads and recreation sites and do a thousand-and-one other jobs, than the order comes to move again.” Thr job starts all over again at the new destination and almost ev ery type of difficulty has confronted Sgt. Lewis since neither New Guinea jungles nor Philippine rice-paddies are particularly adapted to construc tion work, but necessity has pro duced many miracles in this war and somehow the job has always been accomplished. Sgt. Lewis wears the wreath of the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque, awarded his outfit for its work in New Guinea, and a battle star each on his Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and Philippine Liberation ribbons. His vile. Mrs. Alice Lewis, resides at 17730 Brinson street, Wyandotte, and he is an alumnus of Western Michigan College. Prior to his en try into the service in August, 1942. Sgt. Lewis worked as a salesman and a boat-builder. Air Navy Predicted Secretary of the Navy James For restal predicts that more than 60 per cent of the Navy's postwar strength will be in the new air arm. His prediction came to light when he commented favorably upon a contemplated plan to make flight training compulsory for Naval Aca demy graduates. Mr. Forrestal pointed out that eventually leading commands will go to those men whose work is connected with the air program. This development will be an "evo lution—not a revolution,” the Sec retary explained. "We mustn't for get that there are submarines, sur face and amphibious forces. The submarines, for example, in the Pa cific, are picking up airmen all the time, and I can assure you that every time an airman gets picked up, he becomes a convert to the submarine.” SADDLE HORSE SHOP RE-OPENING OF FREDERIKE'S BLACKSMITH 23648 SIBLEY ROAD FIRST HOUSE RIGHT HAND SIDE EAST OF TELEGRAPH TOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS' AT RIALTO ' '&' " ";'"': V' i ll ’* \,;.’. ;_,*.. > *«' J ; t'" v Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman co-star in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" which is now being shown on the screen of the Rialto theatre.
