NO. 67—FIVE CENTS PER COPY Two Are Awarded Bronze Star Medal Posthumous Presentation Made To Gierlock The Bronze Star Medal for Her oic Achievement has been awarded posthumously to S Sgt. Thomas Gierlock, whose mother, Mrs. Mary Gierlock, lives at 749 Orange, Wy andotte. Gierlock was serving with the 254th Infantry Regiment of the 63rd (Blood and Fire) Division. During an attack in the vicinity of Jeb sheim, France, Jan. 28, he, as lead er of a light machine gun section, conducted himself in an exceptional manner, never failing to aid in the forward movement of his guns. Re peatedly, he exposed himself to in tense enemy fire in order to more efficiently control his section. In a subsequent action he was shot and killed. “His courage and leadership were an inspiration to all who witnessed his actions and contributed greatly to the success of the attack.” says the citation accompanying the dec oration. Private First Class Joseph A. Wieclaw of Wyandotte, has been presented the Bronze Star Medal. Among the first American troops to enter the Philippine capi tal, Infantryman Wieclaw Is the son of MTs. Victor Olszewski of 1444 Elm street, Wyandotte. The citation accompanying the award reads: “When the ammuni tion supply of his machine gun sec tion was diminished because of heavy supporting fire for assault troops crossing a river in Manila, Private Wieclaw twice fooved 400 yards to the rear under heavy enemy machine gun, artillery and rifle fire and returned, wading neck-deep in the river, with three boxes of ammunition." A veteran of more than 23 months overseas service, Wieclaw previously saw action as a jungle fighter on Bougainville, in the Solomons, and has served on New’ Caledonia and Guadalcanal. In addition to the Bronze Star, he wears the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Luzon, the Combat Infantryman Badge for exemplary service in ac tion. and the Asiatic-Pacific cam paign ribbon with tu’o Battle Stars. Aboard Destroyer In Pacific ABOARD A DESTROYER IN THE WESTERN PAClFlC—Already a survivor of a torpedoing in the Mediterranean, Natale C. Palazzolo, 20, fireman, first class, USNR, of Wyandotte, fights on in the Pacific. Palazzolo was aboard the destroy er escort USS HOLDER when she was hit by a German aerial torpedo in the Mediterranean last year. Be low’ decks in a repair group. Palaz zola w’as unhurt and remained aboard the ship while it was towed back to the States and decommis sioned. He was then assigned to this new destroyer and has since fought the Japanese off Luzon, Formosa, French Indo-China, Tokyo Bay, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He has seen his ship's guns knock four Japanese planes into the seas. Palazzolo's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Natale C. Lashbrook, radarman, third class, USNR, whose wife lives at 412 Eureka, Wyandotte, serves aboard the USS INDEPENDENCE, one of the Navy’s front line aircraft car riers which has participated in the aerial onslaught on Tokyo. When the planes of the INDE PENDENCE started off the flight deck within 100 miles of the Jap mainland on the first strike, it marked the realization of an ambi tion long cherished by ever 4 }’ mem ber of the crew, from the captain on down because the ship had been torpedoed at Tarawa In November, 1943. The attack was the first of its kind unleashed against the To kyo area since last February. As part of the more than 1.000 carrier-borne aircraft participating in the attack, planes from this flat - top strafed and bombed some 80 air fields in and around the Japanese capital. DeWalt Gets Commission FORT BENNING, GA —(Special) —Donald N. DeWalt, of Wyandotte, was commissioned a Second Lieut enant in the Army of the United States, August 16. upon successful completion of the Officer Candidate Course at The Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Lt. DeWalt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. DeWalt of 2349 Eighth street, Wy andotte. The new lieutenant enlisted in the Army July 30, 1943, and served with the Army Air Forces before taking the Officer Candidate Course four months ago. He held the rank of private before being commis sioned. The new officer is a graduate of Roosevelt high school at Wyandotte. At The Infantry School, world's largest institution of Its kind, the local officer took a four month course to fit him for his new’ re sponsibilities. The course covers the technique of handling all the varied modern Infantry weapons and the tactics of leading small Infantry units in combat. At the same time he is taught such diverse, yet nec essary, subjects as military law’, mess management, and administra tion. He is constantly impressed wih the enormous responsibility of an officer in time of war. The men who attend the Officer Candidate Course include the best privates, corporals and sergeants from army units, selected by their superiors for outstanding intelli gence and qualities of leadership. During the course even the mildly incapable are weeded out, so that the men who graduate with com missions are America's finest sol diers, fully qualified to be the lead ers in the army. WYANDOTTE, MICHIGAN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1945 Receives Honor * jjdjraK Sgt. A. M. Simpson On August 4 Sergeant Andrew M. Simpson received the Bronze Star at ceremonies held in France. Sgt. Simpson's wife, Willabel, and son, Howard, live at 1028 Lindbergh avenue. Before entering the serv ice on March 23. 1942, Sgt. Simpson was employed by Wyandotte Chem icals Corporation at the South plant. Attached to the 16th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. Mechan ized. Sgt. Simpson’s citation states that it was given “for meritorious achievement in connection with mil itary operations against the enemy in Germany on March 15, 1945. Dur ing an attack on Waldrach, Ser geant Simpson led his men down a fire swept hillside and into the town. His courageous and deter mined action contributed greatly in the capture of the objective and brought distinct credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the Uni ted States.” Promoted To Sergeant Matthew W. Sobczyk. one of the men stationed at this Air Transport Command Base in Prestwick, Scot land, has recently been promoted from Corporal to Sergeant. Sgt. Sobczyk is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sobczyk of Wyandotte. His wife, Marion, is residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bra shaw of 626 Vinewood avenue, Wy andotte. Before entering the Armed Forces on July 17, 1942, Cpl. Sobczyk was employed by the Danna Distribut ing company as a salesman. He is a graduate of the local high school. After receiving his basic training at Bolling Field, Washington he was stationed here a short while until his departure for duty over seas. Upon arrival in the European Theater of Operations, he was as signed to the European Division of the Air Transport Command, Brig. General Earl S. Hoag, Commanding. At this trans-Atlantic terminal, Sgt. Soblzyk is working as the pri son sergeant in the military police section. Parsons Receives Award WTTH THE 81ST INFANTRY DIVISION SOMEWHERE IN THE PACIFIC—Pfc. Earl R. Parsons, son of Mr. Nelson E. Parsons, of 3321 Van Alstyne boulevard, Wyandotte, has been awarded the Motor Ve hicle Driver Badge for “excellent performance of duties as a driver of wheeled vehicles.” Private Parsons is a member of Maj. Gen. Paul J. Mueller’s 81st Infantry “Wildcat” Division, which last fall wrested the Palau and other Western Caroline Islands from the Japs. Wyandotter Flies Home Miami, Florida Speeded toward home from overseas as part of the “Green Project” which calls for the Air Transport Command's Car ibbean Division to fly 30,000 re turnees from Europe to Miami Army Air Field each month, another Wy andotte man. pvt. Oliver C. Baker, is back in the states. In less than 24 hours he left for Camp Blanding, Fla., by rail. From there he will go to a reception cen ter nearer home for separation from the service or furlough prior to re assignment. Pvt. Baker’s Wyandotte address is 669 Hudson street. He was over seas 21 months with the 383rd Com bat Engineers in the Mediterranean theater of operations. He wears the E.T.O. ribbon with three battle stars. Car mody, Jr., USNR, was aboard a 7th Fleet PT tender during the action near Davao Gulf, Mindanao, Southern Philippines. Carmody's wife. Henrietta, lives at 1765 Dee street, Wyandotte. His duty is to supervise the main tenance force of the PT boats. Carmody. 35, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Carmody, of 42 E. Charlotte street, Ecorse. He has four children. Alfred, 12, Edward, 10, Anita, 8, and Catherine, 7. Carmody participated in the in vasion of the Philippines and Lin gayen Gulf. He also saw action in western New Guinea. He has two brothers in the serv ice, Joseph Carmody, 25, boatswain's mate, first class, USNR, is aboard a landing craft in the South Paci fic and Thomas Carmody, 19, sea man, first class, USNR. is in the Merchant Marine. Raymond Soucie, husband of Rose Soucie of 1156 Second street, is among the members of the 46th Field Hospital near Oslo who are serving in their fifth European country since leaving the United States in February, 1944. In preparation for treating wounded men from the invasion beaches, they set up a tent hospi tal near Southampton, England, a few weeks before D-Day last year. They moved to the continent to serve in Eastern France in August, spent the winter in Belgium near Liege, taking care of many victims of the German Ardennes offensive, and then moved to Bonn, Germany, after the Ist Army crossed the Rhine in March. Since the middle of May they have been in Norway as a part of the U. S. Task Force under the com mand of Brig. Gen. Owen Sumners. The 46th Field Hospital is com manded by William P.
