PHONE 0530 Crosse lie Takes League Title; Will Play In State Tournament Sailors Defeat River Rouge In Play-Offs Play First Game In State Tourney At Flint Saturday Afternoon CASU Grosse lie service team de feated Mondons Bar, River Rouge, 6-5 for the Down River baseball playoff title. Bobby Sclater, River Rouge boy, after pitching beautifully for six innings, walked three men in the last of the seventh to set the stage for the winning runs. Catcher Bonetta of CASU came through with a hit to win the ball game. Red Eary, CASU pitcher, made two successive balks with bases loaded to give Rouge a two run lead until the last inning. CASU will represent the league at Flint in the State Recreation baseball tournament August 31- September 3. CASU has drawn a first round bye and will play its first game in the tournament Sat urday afternoon. Tournament rules permit several batterymen to be taken from the league and Bobby Sclater, Rouge pitcher, will go alone with the Navy men to give CASU four first-class pitchers. Sport Shots —by Harry Whitlow Well, right now we can take our hats off to the fast going C.A.S.U. Class A Baseball team. The boys stepped right out and won the playoff championship besides cop ping the league title. To win the playoffs they took Mondon's Bar of River Rouge down in the final game, 6 to 5. This team should go far in the State playoffs to be held in the next couple of weeks. Lots of the well-known luck. A couple of swell guys in the softball leagues—Elmer Hoffhiens of Halowax. Elmer is the kind of a guy that makes it a pleasure to have his team beat you. Another egg that is a pretty nice sort of a fellow—lggy Pierzynowski who does the pitching for Fitzgerald Realty Class A Softball gang. In the couple of years that I have watched Iggy pitch I have never seen or heard any sort of a growl from him —regardless if the ump had called a bad one or if the team playing back of him made a dozen errors. Iggy is always in there trying and never a yap out of him. It*s guys like the at we two that make it a pleasure to play baseball or soft ball. Os course, there are other fel lows the same as these two, when the chips are down they get in and play all the harder. In another Club League Old Tim ers the Knights of Columbus play ing shorthanded, gave the Jaycees a whitewash and won by the score of 7 to 0. In the Open Old Timers the Drvsdale service team showed that they are still in the middle. Coming from behind they won over Halowax by the score of 15 to 8. For the winners Bourassa, Beattie and Har nish all had three hits. In the second game played, the top spot Hoersch Shoes won a thrill er from Chelsea Clothes 10 to 8. Chelsea, in the first three innings, had a lead of 8 to 3 but these boys from Hoersch kept going and when the smoke had settled they were the top team. For the winners, Driscoll had three hits, two singles and a homer. The hero for Hoersch was the rotund left fielder, Doc Loselle. Doc came up in the last half of the seventh inning with the score tied 8 all and laid into one of Bud Suzor's pitches and got himself a clean homerun to win the ball game. In the Junior Old Timers Elmers showed the way and won a thriller from Len s Inn by the score of 5 to 4. Going into the seventh, Elmers filled the bases and with one out, a long fly to the outfield scored the winning run. In a surprise game the Penn Salt outplayed the Oak Case crew ahd walked off the field with an 8 to 4 win.
