WOOD or STEEL • CUSTOM BUILT TO FIT YOUR WINDOWS 14-Day Delivery Mendus Home After Four Years in Aleutians With Secret Bomb Squadron Just returning to the United States after 10 months in the Aleutian Islands is S/Sgt. I. R. Mendus, of 1046 Eureka road, Wy andotte, who served as an Engin eer Gunner with the 77th Medium Bomber Squadron, first aerial com bat unit to go overseas after dec laration of war by the United States and veterans of Japanese attack again* Dutch Harbor, Alas ka, and the Attu, Kiska and‘Jap anese Kurile Island campaigns. The r i7th Bomb Squadron, alerted for overseas shipment two days after Pearl Harbor, were still fighting the Japanese in the Kuriles when the enemy finally offered to surrendered. During this period, the Squadron set up an enviable combat record. Battling the Aleu tian weather as much as the ene my, they rose up from secret Aleu tian bases to intercept a Japanese carrier task force attacking Dutch Harbor June 3 and 4, 1942. They then drove the enemy back to Kiska and Attu, where the Japs settled, and where they were given no rest by the 77th until Americans regained those Aleutian Islands. Of the many notable firsts of the 77th Bomb Squadron was the July 10, 1943 Mitchell bomber raid on Paramushiru and Shimushu Islands in the Kuriles. That was the flr*t time Japanese home islands were raided in the war, with the notable exception of General Doolittle’s famous Tokyo raid from the Carrier Hornet the year before. Itself virtually wiped out four times during overseas service (49 medium bombers lost), the 77th conducted 51 bombing missions against Kiska, seven against Attu, and 146 missions against the Kur iles, for a long time the longest overwater mission of the war. During this period, 77th Bomb Squadron shipping sweeps cost the enemy at least 22 cargo and war ships and transports sunk, seven probably sunk and 30 damaged. At least six Japanese aircraft were shot down, nine probably destroyed and 30 damaged. Because of the secrecy of Aleu tian warfare, the existance of the 77th Bomb Squadron was never made known publicly from that day in Spring of 1942 when they flew out to their secret Aleutian bases, until the war’s end. S/flgt. L R. Mendus reported for duty with the 77th on Nov. 14, 1944. Since that date, he has seen ar duous and courageous service, whether flying against the enemy oi servicing aircraft or otherwise maintaining the squadron in the lonely, weather-whipped Aleutians. Inducted into the army at Jef ferson Bks., St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 29, 1942, he attended Army and AAF schools at Sheppard Field, Texas, Engineering School, Fort Meyers Gunnery School Field, R. T. U., Greenville, S. C. In civilian life he was a sheet metal worker at the Murray Cor poration, Detroit. S/Sgt. I. R. Mendus has been awarded the Aid Medal, the Bronze Star to the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. Trenton Residents Asked to Donate Gifts for Veterans Tremon residents were asked this Week to contribute gifts to be dis tributed at Christmas time to vet erans at Percy Jones hospital. The Commissioner has sent vouch ers to Auditor General John D. Morrison for payment to the coun ties and cities of Michigan of the third uqarter weight tax amounting to $2,813,786.20. All weight tax money is returned to the counties and cities for use or city streets and country roads. The third quarter return makes a total of $21,104,326.03 returned to the counties in weight tax for the first three quarters of 1945, com pared to $21,051,115.65 for the same three quarters in 1944. FILM ON DISCHARGED VETERANS TO BE SHOWN In addition to a short film on Paraguay, which tells the story of the country’s sturdy and indepen dent people who have survived a devastating history of warfare and disadvantage, the film, “Michigan Welcomes the Veteran,” will be shown at the Rackham Educational Memorial at 1:30 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, the Uni versity of Michigan Extension Serv ice announces.
