Walter S. Morris, said today outlining the advantages of Army life. Sgt. Morris, in charge of the Wy andotte recruiting detachment, re minded ERC men that January 31 is the deadline for re-enlistment in the new peacetime regular Army at present grades. Veterans keep grades and pay scales if they re enlist 20 days after discharge or by January 31. Nearly 50,000 veterans, most of them originally draftees, have re enlisted since October. 1945. Perhaps most important of all Its numerous advantages—free med Coast Guard Trains In California Operung an intensive two-mouth lecruiting drive to enlist men 17 to 30, the Coast Guard today reported that all recruits from the Great Lakes district will be sent to Ala meda, California, for basic training. Previously men enlisting from this area have been transferred to Curtis Bay, Md., for indoctrina tion. Authorized peacetime strength of the Coast Guard is expected to be about 30,000. By the end of June, •when the demobilization of reserves v.ill be completed, only 20.000 reg ular Coast Guardsmen now in serv ice will remain on duty, necessitat ing enlistment of 10,000 more men. The future of the American sol dier who has decided to follow a military career is indeed a bright one—with opportunities for ad vancement, good pay, education, travel, retirement and numerous other benefits combining to make his “the best job in the world.” Arriving On Hospital Ship Frank O. Balko, F 1-c, USNR, of 3353 Twentieth street, is one of 121 high-point Navy veterans whom the Navy is returning to the States for discharge aboard the hospital ship, U.S.S. Solace which left Pearl Har bor January 10 and was scheduled to arrive in San Francisco about January 16. The J.S.S. Solace is a unit of the Navy’s mercy fleet which evac uated and care 1 for wounded from islands, seized by U. S. invasion forces throughout the Pacific. This ship is now operating with the ma gic carpet fleet. Balko Headed For Home Frank O. Balko, F 1-c, 3353 Twentieth street, is getting ready to rejoin the ranks of civilians, together with thousands of others going through the Naval demobil ization center at Pearl Harbor, headed for the States. Redeployment By United Press Twenty-one ships were scheduled to arrive at east and West coast ports Monday with 16,048 return ing servicemen.
