SATURDAY, MAY 15, 1943 BURLINGTON NEWS' Prof. J. P. Gunn, Mr. and Mr a. Author Corbitt and Mr. J. T. Moore attended the funeral eervicea of Mrs. Ruth Jefferies at Martins Chapel Church lust Sunday, they also attended the Baccalaureate service at the PleuHunt Grove high school while in that vicinity, the ser mon wuk delivered by the Rev. F. O. Uass pastor of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, High Point. Mr. Claranece Haith who ranks as u sergeant, with the 11. Q. Department 9th Regiment, at Camp Lee, Va., was in the city over the week-end visiting rela tives and friends. Mrs. Olivia Mitchell of the big falls road is very sick at this writing, we hope for her a speedy recovery. The spring revival that was carried on at the First Baptist Church last week with much success was conducted by Rev. C. Taylor of Siler City. Many souls were saved and added to the church by baptism Suuduy night, after the celebration of mothers day, the total collection for the wub wos sl9 4.51. The one day conference pre sided by Mrs. Nellie T. Ilerbin, of Greensboro. Mrs. Sarah Holt conference president, Mrs. Murry H. Shepherd conference Treasur er. The meeting was featured by the annual sermon delivered b$ Rev. W. T. Harris of Greensboro. There were many outstanding women from Washington, D. C., to Graham, also many ministers present. Dinner was served at the J. F. Gunn elementary school caferterla and all seemed to be happy. Mrs. Montre Murry de livered the welcome address. Other churches of the city join ed in to make it pleasant for the visitors. The object of the meet ing was to create a better spirit among the churches. Rev. C. S. Stroud, pastor of the St. Matthews A. M. E. church was host. Taylor of Camp Butner, Dur ham, were the week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Johusou of Apple street.. Other service men who were in the city was Sergeant Troy Lea and Pfc. Mack Leath, Mr. Leath is a son of Mrs. Rebecca Leath of East Graves street this city. Miss M. C. Sellars and Mrs. Maud Moultre attended the North Carolina federation of Negro women club, last week the meeting was held in the Pfeifier science hull, Bennett College Greensboro. Miss Sellars was a representative of the DuHinohs and Professional Women’s club tliis city. The spring revival of the Ebenezer Christian Church will begin Sunday morning, May 16th. Rev. G. T .Hall of Now Port News', Va., will ot'ficuto the meeting will continue through the preceding week. The public is cordially invited to attend. Rev. W. M. Lake, pastor. Mrs. Eula Moore of the Glen coe Road is in New York City at present attending to business of personal interest, she is ex pecting to return home soon. Dr. W. R. Perry spent the week-end in Warrenton, visit ing relatives and friends. BENNETT COLLTGE ANNOUNCES COMMENCEMENT EVENTS President J. W. Seabrook of Fayetteville Teachers College will he the commencement speak er at Bennett College Monday, May 24, at 10:30 a. m. it was announced here recently by President David D. Jones. Dr. Jackson Davis, associate director of the General Educa tion Board will speak at the baccaluureate service Sunday, May 23 at 4 p. m. The commencement season opens Sunday, May 16, when John R. Piukett, prominent busi ness and civic leader of Wash ington, D. C. will speak at the final vespers. Homecoming und the Alum nae College will be held from Friday night May 21, with the recital by the Bennett College Choir directed by Orrin Clayton Suthern, 11. Activities on Saturday include the meeting of the graduate association at 10 a. m., the All- Bennett Luncheon at 1 p. m., Senior Class day exercises at 4 p. m., Little Theatre Guild Pro duction at 8 p. m., and tradition al cumpus illumination at 9:30 p. m. Reunion breakfasts will he held Sunday morning at 8 a. m. Alpha Epsilon Honor Society meets at 10 a. m. The president's reception to graduates, former students and friends will be held Sunday even ing at 8 p. in. In simplifying manufacture of hand tools for Victory Gardens, 324 types of forks have been cut to 76, styles of rakes have been reduced from 55 to 8, hoes from 362 to 39, and hand culti vators from 14 to 8.
