hahaving been found guilty of
“stowing away In the Navy” at
the U. S. Naval Training Sta
tion, Greut Lakes, 111.
The boys one of whom is 14
and the other, 13, enlisted in
the Navy aa 17-year-olds by forg
ing their mothers’ signatures on
Navy recruiting papers. The
hoax was discovered at the U.
S. Naval Training Station when
their mothers’ wrote Navy
authorities disclosing the true
ages of their sons.
Youngest of the two is Hudson
Anderson, son of Mrs. Bruce
Butler of 3A Harlem Square,
Greenville, S. C., will be 14 years
old August 13. The other is
Lionel Harold Brown, son of
Mrs. Mayola Keller Brown of

IN MINING AREAS

facts on the cost-of-living in coal
| mining areas, Price Administra
tor Prentiss M. Brown today
assigned a crew o finvestigators
to make an immediate check on
price levels and on compliance
with price ceilings in coal-pro
ducing sections of five states.
The states are Pennsylvania,
West Virginia, Kentucky, Alu
liama and Illinois.
"I have instructed our field
men to Investigate the prices |
j being charged in coal mining
towns, concentrating first on
‘ prices for food,” Mr. Brown
said. “They are to collect other
data on the general level of
prices in those towns and to
check for violations of price
ceilings.
“Investigators will report
their findings as soon as possible
and will follow up any viola
tions with enforcement action.”
SUGAR
FOR HOME CANNING
After May 15, North Carolina
housewives may apply for their
allotment on sugar for canning
and preserving. A top limit of
25 pounds of sugar per person
is set for the new regulation.
However, the 25-pound figure
Is a maximum to be granted oply
in the relatively few cases where
this large amount of fruit will
be canned and preserved . . .
Within the 25-pound per person
limit, any family can apply for
sugar to put up jams, jellies,
and preserves at the rate of five
pounds per individual. This 1b
a more generous allowance than
last year, when sugar for pre
serves was limited to one pound
per person.

To safeguard dependents and
others who regularly receive
government checks, the follow
ing procedure for North Caro
linians is urged by the U. S.
Secret Service to help stop
thieves and forgers (1) Some
members of the family should
alwuys be at home when checks
are due to be delivered, (2) All
mail boxes should bo equipped
with a lock, and the individual’s
name should be printed clearly
on'the outside of the box, (3)
Checks should be cashed In the
same place each month, mak
ing identification easier. (4)
Checks should not be endorsed
until you are In the presence of
the person who la to cash it.

Our ancestors were all immigrants. Even the American Indians, we
are told, came to our shores from Asia. Then let us not view the word “Im

service bar similar to the cam
paign burs of the armed ser
vices, according to a recent an
nouncement of the civilian de
fense director. Six distinctive
bars for service ranging from
suu to 5,0f>0 hours will be given
to civilian volunteers. All civil
ian defense volunteers may
qualify for the awards mem
bers of the Citizens Defense
Corps, the Citizens Service corps,
Forest Fire Fighters service,
and Civilian Evacuution service.
