One is the statehood question and the other is the question of opening up tho big Sioux reservation. The latter is the larger question in portions of Dakota, particu larly in the Black Hills and in the coun try to tho east of the Black Hills on tho Missouri river. Pierre did a great deal of work to in fluence the Forty-ninth congress to open the reservation, and will send a delegation of leading citizens to AVash ington this winter to work in the 6ame behalf. Tho Black Hills country will also bo represented there ou the same business. These, and probably other delegations, will co-operate to the full est oxtont possible with Delegate Gifford ki the work of getting the southern half of the groat reservation open to rail roads and to settlement. The Chicago and Northwestern is halting at Pierre, aud the Chicago, Mil waukee and St. Paul and Cliamberlait and Running Water awaiting the action of coDgress. There is no doubt that thaee lines avould be extended westward promptly upon the settlement of the re servation question, opening tip a great country to settlement and establishing valuable communication with the rich iriinoral regions and stock ranges of the west. The oponing of the reservation would give a wonderful impetus to the Black Hills country and to all that portion of Dakota lying to the eastward, adding immensely to tho population and busi ness of Southern Dakota. The Black Hills country would early be supplied with the railroad facilities required to develop it« great .resources, while Pierre and Chamberlain particularly woulil have-sndh ••booms" as they have never known before. The lines of communication would speedily extend westward from the Missouri river in all directions, reach 'ing into Montana, Idaho and Wash ington territories—in fact, opening a great middle belt between the Union Pacific and the Northern Pacific be tween the Pacific coast and the Mis souri river. tsioux City has reason to be sorne thiug more than an interested spectator. Sioux City'should co-operate to the ox tent of its influence and power to secure the end for which its friends in Dakota are so earnestly striving. Tho opening of the reservation and the extension of the roads westward from the Missouri rivpr can ouly mean a wonderful en largement of the trade territory of Hioux City. The Journal is glad to call the atten tion of tho Sioux City Jobbers' and Manufacturers' asMoeialiou to this work, and invite it to join hands with the good peoplo of Dukotn in further)!)? it. iSiut^tStv Journal. t- j"* K 4 B.
