William Caldwell, Sr., has sold his farm to Mr. Monroe and purchased the house and lot owned by his son, Wil liam, in this village Carl Hollister met a painful accident last Saturday night while riding home on a corn cutter. He turned out to pass a team when the corn cutter tipped over, throwing; him upon one of the knives, infiictiug an ugly gash about four inches long and two deep in the back of bis right leg opposite his knee and exposing the cords and large arteries. He also received a wound in his left leg near the ankle. Dr. V. C. Morrice. There were four young men from this section in the war with Spain. Linn Avery, Battery F, regular army was in all the battles near Santiago. He escaped Injury from 6hot and shell but has had his share of the fever Incident to the climate and the exposure and fatigue of the campaign. He has concluded to return to his home on fur lough for sixty days. He is a son of James Avery living on the county line five miles south-east of here D. L. Myers of the 88d regiment took part In the siege of San tiago and bad fifteen days sickness with malarial fever but at present is at home on a 60 day furlough. His company was so situated that they saw Cervera's fleet when it left the harbor, and two of the fchlps when they were disabled and driven to shore Charles Macomber a member of the 82d Mich., whose parents live four miles south of here died at Fernandiua, Fla. of typbo pneumonia. The funeral took place at the Fuller school house Sun day Lester Parmenter enlisted in April. He is an orphan boy, a grandson of David Johnston of this village, who rectntly re ceived a letter from him mailed at Ponce, Porto Rico, where his company Is doing doty. He Is in good health. Laingsburg. Phllonzo Taylor fell from his road cart last Friday and has been contined to his bed since in consequence of the shaking up. He is gaining slowly at this time. Mrs. Esther Kinney died Sept. 9th, at the home of her son, Charles Kinney, three miles east of this village. She was familiarly known as Grandma Kiuuey and was aged 102 years and 5 months. She was a christian lady, very highly respected and a life-long mem ber of the Baptist church. Her funeral was largely attended at the Baptist church, Mouda afternoon. Services conducted by Rev. F. L Allen. John E. Sweet was riding in an open buggy Sunday evening when In- rig came in collision with a carri age driven by Wm Feek. throwiug Mr. Sweet and wife out and bruising them severely. A large amount of concrete walk has been put down in the village in the past three weeks, in fact nearly all walks in front of business places have been replaced with this material. A great im provement. The apple drjtr is now run ning full blast and doing a good business. Fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon in Mrs. Rose Blizzard's restaurant, on Grand River street, aud the contents of the restau rant were destroyed before the fire was sub dued. The loss was about $500, without insurance. The fire company did good work and probably saved the row of wooden buildings west of the Cooper House.: Rev. J. A. Rowe will preach his farewell sermon next Sunday morning. He expects to remove to some other field of labor. He leayes many warm friends here, who wish him a prosperous future. Nation Making In tbe Nineteenth Century. The fall course of University Extension lectures to be given in Owoseo, by Prof. George E. Fellows, ofChktgO University, will begin Friday evening, Oct. 14th. Under the general head, "Nation Mak ing in the Nineteenth Century," Prof. Fellows in lecture I will discuss "The po liticial and social condition of Europe aft er the fall of Napoleon." Lecture II "France from Louis XVIII to the second republic, 1814 to 1848." Lecture III "Revolutionary waves, 1820-1848, and the making of Italy." Lecture IV "How Napoleon III affected France and the making of the France of todav." Lecture V "The building of the German Em pire." Lecture VI The great questions of the present century." Subjscta so full of interest at the pres ent time as these, treated by a lecturer ot the broad scholarship, ready wit, and genial personality of Dr. Fellows, can not fail to prove so attractive to our citizens as to insure the success of the course.
