feodlftver Slaciei THURSDAY, NOVEMBER, 1903. The very welcome news la given out that a feasable plan has been perfected for a ship c-unal around Celilo rapids, and that the government officials hav lug the mutter in charge are only wait ing for deeds of right of way before be ginning eoiihtruclion work. The prin cipal right of way must come from the 0. B. & hut as this splendid com pany is favorable to ail projects for the good of the Inland Empire, no delay if expected from this source. The canal Ut to cost 14,125,000, and it is thcight can be completed In five years. This will give 500 miles of unobstructed nav igation on the Cotumbia, and that devoutly-wished for open river to the sea shall be truly consummated. The meeting of the Northwestern Fruit Growers' association in Portland, next January, promises to be an im portant gathering. Hood River apple men will not be rushed w ith work at that time, and a large number will like ly attend. E. L. Smith is anxious that Hood River send a good display of fruit. Before the packing season closes and it is too late to get nice fruit, some of tire beet fruit should be reserved for this ex hibit. Plates of five apples each are wanted. The National conven tion of the Live Stock association will meet in Portland on the same date, when 5,000 delegates are expected to at tend. Our fruit growers must not mist this chance to show off Hood River apples. The Glacier has inaugurated a "Hor cultural column," and invites contribu tions from the fruit growers- of Hood River, White Salmon and Mosier. This column is intended to be a permanent feature each week hereafter. Being the leading fruit center in Oregon, any thing our fruit growers may have to say will not only be of mutual benefit, but will also receive attention from other sections of the state and nation. Hon. E. L. Smith, president of the state; board of horticulture, furnishes an able article this week. Articles by any fruit grow er touching on methods of cultivation, harve8ting,marketing,etc.,will be gladly received. A petition is being circulated and free ly signed asking for the reappointment of W. M. Yates as postmaster at Hood Rifer. The Qlacier takes pleasure in offering Mr. Yates a hearty endorsement. No more conscientious and efficient postal official can be found in Oregon. Complimentary remarks are often heard from mail clerks on the O. R. & N. and Southern Pacific trains of the splendid service out of Hood . River, Mr. Yates lias served faithfully for four years, never taking a vacation during that time. He has made the best postmaster Hood River ever had, and the people do not expect to find a better. The Oregon irrigators held a profit able session this week at Pendleton The writer regrets that duties with the 'stick" and pencil prevented him at tending. The great scheme of reclaim lug the nation's arid lands and placing two blades of grass where none grows now, it little understood or appreciated by most people, yet but a few yea rs hence there will rise up thousands to call blessed those who are leading in this noble work. Some of the Oregoneditorial fraternity are boastful about the good time tliev had in fcalem last month; so good, per haps, that it was thought to be wholly unnecessary to mention the irrafts unon their occupation, nor do anything to aoate it. ;ioro uoserver. Don't get sour-bawled, Bro. Ireland, but show up at next year's meeting at Hood River and feast your eyes and inner man on the finest apples in the world. From all parts of the state come news paper accounts of Halloween doings, with comments upon wreckless destruc tion of property. What a blessing it would be if some of this good advice should soak in before another year rolls around. That sewer system the city of Hood River was to have in operation before the winter season, would be very useful just now in carrying off the surface wa ter after the heavy rains. The Republic's Oram! Army. Chicago Inter Ocean. The report of the national commis sioner of education shows that in the year ended June SO lust 15,925,887 chil dren were enrolled in the common schools of the United States. Other schools and the colleges brought the total up to lS,((),80. This vearit may rise to 18,500,000, and possibly higher. Other nations take a just pride in their armies, but no other has such an army as this. In all the mighty British empire, with over 300,000,000 people, there are probably not so many chil dren in school. Even in Germany, the land of scholars, probably not so large a part of the population is in school. And the future of no other nation is so safe iu the hands of its array as is the future of the United States in the bunds of this G rand Army of the Re public the army of its 18,000,000 school boys and school girls. The strength of the republic is in the discipline which its schools give to the millions of recruits which they send each year into the ranks of active tit ixcuship. Thereby are the rising gen eration armed against those enemies w ho would persuade them that U'csust this or that thing is wrong their coun try is going to destruction. In its schools are the swelling mil lions of the republic armed with the sword of the truth that theirs is the best country and the best government In the world. And as long as that sword Is kept bright and sharp, so long will the nation be safe iu the guardian ship of Its grand urmv and so long will the republic endure. Disastrous Wrecks. Carelessness is responsible for many s railway wreck and the same causes are making hnrvRti wrecks of sufferers from throat and lung troubles. But since the advent of Dr. King's New Discovery tor consumption, coughs and colds, even the worri cases can be cured, and hope- ess resignation is no longer necessary. Mrs. Lois Cragg of Dorchester, Mass., is one of many whose life was saved by Dr. Xiim s New Discovery. Hue great remedy is guaranteed for all throat and lung diseases by Chus.N. Clarke, drug gist. Attorney Jayne asked Judge Bradshaw to excuse Jim for the reason that he wanted the work done on his new house, and Jim's services could uot be dispensed with. The judge grant ed the request. Jim, not knowing that Mr. Jayne had interceded for him, also went to the judge and said, owing to the state of his health, he was afraid sitting on the hard benches in the jury box would be too much for his rheumatism. He had other exsuses, all of which con vinced the judge, who said a man with so many excuses ought to be allowed to go home.
