A TRIBUTE TO HOOD RIVER The Kansas City Packer, one of the best market papers In the east, with a veiy large oiioulatlon, published an article on Hood River, written by its staff conespondent, whloh Is repro duced on the first page ot IbeUlaoler, and also poys the following glowing trioute to llood River editorially: In this week's issue ot the Packer appears an aitlcle teling of the re markable suoess apple growers lu the famous flood River valley in Oregon have attained. More or less has been published about the Hood River apple from time to time, but it is safe to sny that most apple growers In other parts of the country who are not Inti mately acquainted with conditions in the llood River vulley have read these articles with more or less suspicion as to whether the statements weie facts or hlshlv colored newspaper articles iotenied to please rather than Inform the peoplo who read them. Last season when it was announced that the flood River growers had sold their apples at bs high as f'XOO per butiel box, whilo growers in other parts ot the country were glad to get 81 to 12 tier barrel for their best ap dIiih. it was not surmising that the teport from llood River was received with discredit. J he facts in the case, hnwcfrer, art that the Hood River growers have been so careful In developing their orchards that Dr y deseive the highly remunerative prices they get lor theii fruit. In the matter of oaring tor their orchards and picking and pack ing the fruit nud iilso seouring a mar ket, the growers have adopted meth ods that are as far in advance of ordi nary orchard conditions bs the price they received is above I he average pi ice for applos. For instance, the statement iu tlio article iu (his week's Pscker that In propaiing ground for an orchard one of the leading growers there goes over his ground 18 ditler ent times with various implemeuts shows bow thoroughly the llood River growers go about their woik. The matter of spraying and pruning his been developed to an exact science by the growers there and also by instruo tors oonneoted witti the various ex I eriment stations in that part of the count y. From all aooouuts every new theory advanced by horticultur ists, no matter from what part of the .ooiiniry, is thoroughly tested by the llood River giowers with the result that they finally get all of the best and most up-to-date methods in use instead of clinging to old fashioned Ideas and lotting their orchards sutler as a coneequeuoe. An Instance is reported in which an industrious Instructor in an expeil ment station a few years ago advanced a rather radical opinion regarding spraying. At that time the theory was laughed st by most growers, but at the present time this man's theory has been adopted by growers iu geuer al in that Hurt of the country an I it has helped them greatly in produoing the very best fruit grown, ibis was simply a case whore the growers were willing to investigate a new theory, although at the moment it was con sidered ot little value. While the llood River growers have accomplished wonders n the matter ef establishing and oailng for their orchards, from a commercial stand point their gieuteet suoess has teen iu the naoking and marketing of their fruit. Rules (or grading and packing apples have been adopted and rigidly enforced which have resulted In praoti cully perfeot fruit beiug oll'ered to the buyers. The giowers. in faot, have adopted such stringent rules that real ly uijre oare is taken In preparing ap pies foi muiket in that section than is commonly piaotioed by growers in many otbei parts of the country when selecting and preparing rruit lorexbl bitiou at state tuirs or elsewheie. Of com Be, there are conditions pre vailing in the llood River valley whloh are not general in other parts ot the country and these have been great aid to the fruit growers, but at the same time these conditions are not wholly responsible for the great success ot the growers, i'he prices the grower! teceive tor their fruits and the increase in the value of their lands, of course, pay them well for the efforts they have put forth, but that simply shows that fruit growlug can be developed along soleutlUo and practical lines so that it will become a sure and safe touroe of inoome, in stead of merely being a haphazard at tempt to make big profits easily. It will pay any grower of apples or other fruits in auy part of the country to read very carefully the artiole above refened to In this Issue ot the Packer. Can you afford to trifle with so seri ous a matter as to neglect a bad cold or cough, when lor a trilling amount you can secure a bottle of "Hickory Bark Cough Remedy," that Is guaranteed to cur or money refunded. Price 25c, 60c nud $1(H) per' bottle. For sale by Chas. JS. Clarke and dealers everywhere.. Government Engineers Take Elevations Saturday party of government en gineers reached Hood River after hav ing spent tour months taking eleva tioua in the Cascade forest reserve and roads leading to the reserve. Tbey were followed by a large party who take up the other part of the work In sketobing the topography ot the country prepartory to making a map showing the roads, trails, streams and other data. The engineers in formed the Glacier man that tnese maps would be ready in a lew weeks, and could be had of the department at a nominal cost. The party left Iioutdale in piu, surveying the Hull Run district, lay ing out new trans lor toe rangers uuu making numerous observations. They left Bull Run May 24, surveying the reserve in that section and then con tinued across the divide to Lost lake, following the Lost Lake road which was built by the rangers ana iioou River people last year and this, tak ing elevations from there to the Hood River O, K. k N. depot. The following are elevations taken and established by benchmarks at vur lous places: Lost lake, 3141 feet, ut present stage of water; bridge at Camp Overall, 1277.5 feet; Winau's htdige over the East Fork ol Hood River, 863.5 feet; liloucher station on the Mt. Hood railroad, 801 feet; Tuoket'a bridge, 426 feet; Advent Christian churoh. 671 feet; lndiau Creek bridge, 410 feet ;higbeht ground in road near uiii s store, uoo ieei; u. R. ft N. depot, 103 feet. The haveled over 17 miles crossing the divide from the Bull Run reserve to Lost lake, the h shest point readi ed being 4340 feet as tbey crossed the divide. The rangers' tiails, however, seek high ridges rather than the eas iest grade, to enable tneni to gun a good lookout over the country lu watching for fires, xne roaa iruui Lost lake to Hood River also goes ovei llurnt mountain, reaubing a point bout 3800 feet, whereas a water grade up Laurel sreek could be made at a gradual rise from the bridge over the West Fork to the lane, uui luuie would be some expensive rock outs to be made. The surveying party claim that a wagon road can oe maae iu cuuuom Lout lHke'.with the wBaon road iu the Uull Run reserve at no greui. ukbl, and nnlv about ten miles to grade, and at no greater elevation than 4000 feet in crossing the divide. Ibis would make the finest scenic loute for nntnmnhllng. from Hood River to Portland, iu the United States. aiirrrTin iTltf raYCJiiuuiivj c rim M1TTEE REPORTS er District Fair and Carnival When the various committees for the district fair and carnival met at the dub rooms last night the brut business was reorganizing the becoud Eastern Oreson District Fair HHS 'iiiu- tion for united work ou the oomiiig fair. The imtel accommodations at all Ciatsop Beacb resorts are excellent and ample for the heavy summer trav el, Lewiston, Idaho, Aug. 17, 1907. Mr. M. F. Emmett, Hood River, Ore. A visit to my brother in the Clear water country was the primary object ot this trip. It ilso afforded an op portunity to visit the famous Pieroe City mining district, located but a few miles away and which Is so well known among mining men as espeoipl iy rich in gold. Several Hood River men as well as others can testify as to the marvelous richness of the placer ruiuos of this district over 40 years ago. Mining being one of the chief sources ot our wealth as a nation, it is an interesting subject to consider. As a business, however, so many un scrupulous men have found H possl hie to deceivo end defraud an over oieduloua ublio, anything in the shape ot mining ia looked upon with suspicion and distiust by nearly ail conservative people. All the better if it will lead to more carotul investlga tion and the weeding out of fraudu lent concerns. The recent exposures ot such scbeme4 in some of I he lead ing periodicals is light In line with the reform SDirit ot the day. On the other band sold as well as coal and iron is needed in the world's business and honest mining should be encouraged. If the Ozark and Wild Rose mines are good and nuaer prop- management, we would like to now it ; 11 not, mat snouia bibo ue made known. Mr. Abbott nd myself desired to nipruve tbe opportunity 10 maae preliminary Investigation as to , tbe character and reputation of tbe men n charge ot tbe business as well as of the quality of the mines. Altbougb ot a minimi expert, l nave aiuaiea a good deal along tbia line and thii is ot mv first visit tc a mine. rar. ac- bott, however, has had years of exper ience in mining and is familiar with all tbe details of tbe work. Our first step was to find as many disinterest ed parties as possible who are ao quaiuted with tbe mines and the men n charge of tbe property, especially the latter, as the safety of the stock holders will depend mainly on me management. We are prepared to say that all tbe evidence we have been able to gatbet is decidedly in favor, not only of the mines, but also ot tbe men in oharge. So far as we can die cover, they are all oapaoie ana relia ble an1 blgbiy respected uy an wno know them in other words, honest, straight-forward business men and worthy of our confidence, 'beoon- ee'jiieuces ot opinion seems to be that all that is needed is money and time to develop a very profitable mining business, and that it will be bonostly conducted by those in charge. Since wtltlug the above we nave visitod the Ozaik and Will Rose mines and given them careful Inspec tion. I'ew mining companies nave so many advantages as those possessed bv cnis company. On tbe board ot directors aud a-uong tbe stockholders aie no less than a dozen experienced and reliable mining engineers, whose reputation aa well as money Is staked on the suooeas ot these mines. Ibeii services aie also at the command of the company, thus saving a large part of tbe usual expense or surveying, en glneering and assaying; there is every evidence of the work being done in the moit practical aud economical manner, i'heee mines are unusually accessible, heiua ooly 30 miles trom railroad aud easily reached by good roads. The tunneling is easily and cheaply done, aud a laige part of tbe ore is free milling, easily worked and very prolltnble. Moreover on tne property there is also good water power and a vast amount ot fine Urn her whloh is very essential in mining operations. (Jood buildings bave been erected, a large amount of tunneling done, and the mines are in aotual operation Kv in with the crude methods former ly employed the mines were dividend paying propeitios, and with better methods now introduced and improv ed machinery installed, large results may be looked for. i be ore la good, some of it very rich In gold, operat ing expenses small, and tbe manage' ment safe, conservative and reliable. In short, 1 believe these mines to be even better than represented, and so far as 1 can see possess all the ele ments to bo desired in first class mining enterprise. A. W. Onthank. The Tog'g'ery R.
