Medford Excitement prevailed on the streets last week when It became known that oil had been struck two and one-halt miles east of Medford. Many persons made haste to pur chase property in this district, but found that others had secured op tions find bought up everything In the neighborhood. C. H. Tierce i the owner of S00 acres where the oil discovery has bceii made. About six weeks ago he started to bore for what he then stated was water, but which he now states was In the hopes of getting oil. At a depth of 305 feet, Mr. Pierce let down a can attached to a wire, and when he pulled It to the surface found it full of oil. The oil reaches to within 53 feet of the top of the well. Several ex perts are said to have made an ex amination of this well and the oil and are of the opinion that the well will turn out to be a regular gusher. Farmer Want Game Laws Clutnged. Albany Linn county farmers have started a movement for the amendment of the state game laws so that China pheasants may be killed without regard to season by farmers, fruitgrowers and gardeners, who find the birds In growing crops. The matter was broached at a meet ing of the Linn county council of the Grange, held Saturday afternoon at the hall of Western Star Orange, near this city. After considerable dlacsuslon It was referred to the sub ordinate granges of the' county for consideration and will receive defi nite action at the next meeting of the council in November. To prevent the game birds preying upon growing crops of all kinds is the purpose of the present move ment. Farmers who were present at the meeting want the game laws amended so as to give the farmer rather than the city or town hunter the China pheasant. "We raise the birds and ought to have the right to do as we please with them," was the gist of the sentiment expressed. Must Answer to a Charge of Murder. Eugene Harry Tabor, accused of the murder of Harry Stucke at Dead wood, this county, on Saturday, was Monday bound over for trial In the clcult court under $2000 ball, which the defendant readily furnished. In the examination before a Justice of the peace, Mrs. Stucke was the only witnessed examined. Tabor, the defendant, did not take the stand. Mrs. Stucke In her testimony stated that she and her husband were pass ing through Tabor's field on their way to the postofflce when Tabor ac costed them and ordered them to leave the premises. On their way to the gate Mrs. Stucke declares that Tabor suddenly turned and shot her husband. Tabor also threatened vio lence to Mrs. Stucke, so she says, After killing Stucke, Tabor, so Mrs. Stucke says, searched the wounded man, taking away his revolver. Tabor must answer to the charge of murder In the first degree at the November term of the circuit court Cold Cure Makes Man Wind. Black, a deputy game warden of Forest Grove, applied to the County Board of Relief yesterday for aid. lie was sent to the county hospital, where It Is thought he has a chance of recovery. Black was a saw flier In a logging camp before his appointment aa a deputy. Ho took the heavy dose about a month ago, but the matter has only lately been reported to the county officials. The man Is 38 years old. He Is a brothor-ln-law of W. L. Oatens, private secretary to Governor Chamberlain. Curry County Handlers Buffer. It la only by great care and much work that serious loss of life and damage to property are being prevented. The ranches along Rogue River and between that river and Port Or ford are suffering the most. Many homesteads cabins havo been burned, Saturday night a schoolhouse at Squay Valley, which had been com pleted only a few months before, was burned to the ground. Chinnninn and Indian Damsel Wed Portland An Indian maid and a Chinaman were married at the court house last week, causing a flutter of excitement among the women ab stractors In the County Clerk's office. Jone Bow was the groom, and the Indian bride gave her name fm Lucy Brown. Bow Is 28 years of age and the girl is 18. Before getting the li cense, which was sworn to by Lum Lee, a countryman of Jone Bow, they Inquired of Judge Gantenbeln wheth er there was any legal obstruction In, the way of their marriage. The Judge said 'there was not and per formed the ceremony. OH Depot for Baker City. Baker City The Standard Oil Company concluded negotiations last week for a tract of land for the pur pose of establishing a receiving and distributing depot for this part of the state and for the adjoining trade with Idaho. OREGON BRIEFLETS The 19-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. John Wunderllch, of Banks, near Hlllsboro, fell into a boiler of water last week and was drowned. The circuit court has granted an Injunction against Sheriff Harry Brown, of Lane county, restraining him from levying upon and collect ing 4 axes from the Wells-Fargo Ex press Company for the rights and privileges it enjoys over the lines of the Southern Pacific In Lane county. As a result of rushing out of Pen dleton last week at a high speed on bronchos, Russian MInthorne and Mitchell Lloyd, two well-known Uma tilla Indians, were taken to the hos pital, the former with a fractured skull and the latter with a badly battered leg. MInthorne Is probably fatally Injured. The citizens of Willamette passed the act which makes them an Incor porated town by a vote of 36 to 3. The matter was brought up before the people by an initiative petition. Willamette is a thriving little place on the west side of the Willamette river and connected with Oregon City by an Interurban carllne. Seventy-five million dollars Is a conservative valuation to put on the Oregon products that will be market ed outside of the state during the current season. In other words, this amount of capital, and more, will be brought Into Oregon by the sale of raw material produced by its farms, ranges, forests, riverg and mines. Oregon turkeys will grace the Thanksgiving dinner tables of the American officers and soldiers In the Philippines. A shipment of 3200 of the birds, dressed, frozen and ready for the cook, is now on the way and will arrive at Manila on a transport In ample time. The lot was pur chased from K. G. Young & Co., of Oakland, Or. Mayor Wurzweller, of Prlnevllle, has communicated with the state health authorities relative to estab lishing a quarantine against Bend, Or., where smallpox has broken oat and many people have been exposed. School teachers who came to Prlne vllle last week to attend the Crook County Institute, were turned back by municipal orders, and other trav elers from Bend met the same fate. Bend Is the only town In Crook coun ty where smallpox is known to exist. At a meeting lust week of the com mittee of the Commercial Associa tion, at Pendleton, it was decided to ask the government to provide funds for equipping an experimental farm near Hermlston. The government has already set aside 40 acres of land near Hermlston and has signi fied a willingness to help In Its de velopment. The problem now con fronting the people of the irrigation belt is to get this farm equipped with tools and machinery and Into running order. The water Is at pres ent furnished by the government. Prospectors are finding gold in paying quantities at Mount Glenn, 14 miles from La Grande. This is a new development in the gold fever that has been burning here since the yellow mineral was found on Mount Kuilly, a large mountain overlooking the valley. Several claims are being located dally, and though everything has been done quietly heretofore, It has now leaked out that the finds aro extremely promising. If favor able reports continue to come In, it Is predicted a stampede for claims will follow. Twice tried for the forgery of her uncle's will, Mrs. Mabel Young War ner will again face the Jury In a third trial tor the same offense at Pendleton. The first two trials re sulted In hung Juries. About $40,000 Is Involved In the case, this being the value of the estate of James W. Young, whose will It Is alleged was forged. It has been agreed by the attorneys and defendant that one and probably two of the three wills that were found were forged, but the state has been unable to fasten the forgery upon Mrs. Warner. The Chamber of Commerce has In vited John H. Scott to visit Klamath Falls and to bold a convention for the purpose of interesting the people of Klamath county In an appropria tion of $50,000 to be devoted to the construction of a road to Crater Lake, thence to Odessa, over Govern ment land, and to extend from Odes sa to Klamath Falls and to Merrill, and the California state line, to con nect with the California state high Way from San Diego.
