HOOD RIVER APPLE GROWERS UNION WOMAN'S LEAGUE LEWIS SHOWN UP BY R-N-Y Several copies of the liunil New Yorker have heen brought to the Glacier by John Koberf?, which give considerable information about the methods of E. G. Lewia, promoter of the American Woman's League. The issue of May 11, contains the follow ing editorial : "Let those who wonder why so many people are caught in bunko games read that Idler or circular from E. G. Lewis which is printed on page 567. The parties to whom it was sent held Lewis' notes, which they thought were as good as the (rash they had sent him. lie had for some years been putting up the most affectionate bluff about his great devotion to their interests, but in spite of all this these people needed their money. Now comes this letter, and probably eight people out of ten on reading it over would say it is a direct offer to send the cash at once. Hut if you will study it carefully you will notice that in no way does it argee to pay any cash at all. You have the privilege of saying whether you want cash or stock, but you have nothing else in sight. After you gave up the not. you n lcase Mr. Lewis from his personal obligation to send you any cash. The object of this letter evidently is to secure the personal notes and give in their place other forms of paper or stock which are not bankable lor collection. Thus you notice that when these notes are sent, for collection through reputable banks, Where the cash must be paid before the note is surrendered, they are refused ! We have recently been told that lb.' average woman has no Hence ol humor. Wr doubt if there is a member of the Woman's League who cannot see the joker In this letter." The other article referred, to in the New York farm paier is headed "LOOM Methods of Lewis" and re produces a note and some letters which passed between Lewis and a Mr. White to whom the note had been given. Lewis offered in his letter to let White take stock in the former's trust company in payment of the note at the rate of a share al though Lewis insisted that the stock was worth $200. The Rural New Yorker comments further: "Mr. White refused to step into this trap, as many other victims did; but sent the note for collection through his bank. It was presented for pay ment by tho Mechanics- American National Hank, of St. Louis, and pay ment refused by Lewis. Of course, anyone can see that the offer to pay the note in cash was a safe I. lull', the object was to induce (be holder to change it , for stock in the trust com pany and then Lewis would not be under persona! obliagtlon to pay it in cash. The trust company stock might just as well be advanced to WOO or $f00 or $700 as to $1G0 or $200. Mr. Lewis made the price, but the value of the stock is quite a different mailer. The promise to pay the note in cash was a safe bluff, because those who re sisted the temptation of trust com pany stock, and sent on the notes ex peeling to get the cash, simply got a so called "interim receipt." and no ex planation for failure to send the cash, while the note had pealed out of their hands. By this trick, Lewis got personal possession id' these notes, and in place of them his victims received nothing but these interim receipts for stock in the trust company, which he says he was organizing. The North Tarrytown, N. Y. women refused to give up the notes, and by simply pub lishing the facts compelled Lewis to pay them. In doing so, he made the silly lying excuse that he offered to pay them a year before, but that Mr. Johnson, the postmaster, demanded a fee for collecting them. This silly lie was refuted when we showed the records of the banks which attempted to collect the notes after Lewis alleged that he wanted to pay them. We would like to know what excuse he has now for not paying this note to Mr. White. "At one time Lewis was making much of the fact that the Chase National Hank, of New York City, was his correspondent for his trust but we understand Lewis was requested to withdraw a small account the carried there, and we hear no more about this bank correspondent. "In addition to this note for $500 and interest, we have other claims against Lewis, mostly in "interim receipts," which were set in exchange for the five per cent notes by the trickery ex plained above, amouting to $10,000. These run in claims of children, ser vant girls, old women, decrepit men, and feeble old soldiers, in amounts from $3 up to $3000. No sum was too large or too small for Lewis's greed ; no condition of poverty or need was sacred from his avarice. He would take money from the child, the widow and the infirm of old age with as little compunction or conscience as one would pick a berry from a roadside bush, rha confidence of his adult victimH made his operations as easy as taking pennies from babies; and some of the victims were virtually babies. We repeat that we do not know a :.ingle prominent and success ful publication that is not identified with Lewis's Amercian Women's League scheme; but two or three of the list affect respectibilitv. and have defended Lewis in the past. We Would be interested to know what excuse they make for Lewis's failure to pay these obligations. Some of the really responsible and usually reliable papers like Collier's, Everybody 's Magazine, Farm Journal and - Deline ator ran the advertising of the League scheme last year; but Hoon discovered the error, and withdrew from the enterprise; but the advertising gave Lewis certificate of rensectibilitv. as lie expected it would, and the League schema got some prominence in con sequence. The mass of the rcadere of these publications have no means of knowing that the publisher have now repudiated Lewis, and it seems to us that these publishers owe it' to their readers to tell them the facts. Thus far Collier's Weekly is the only one to refer to the subject editorially, and its public repudiation of Lewis was not all that one might expect under the circumstances. What ii needed is an aroused public sentiment against this form of trickery. It is a big task for one paper to undertake alone ; but if readers of the R.N-Y., would in terest themselves to the extent of spreading the facts in every section where Leagues are being organized, Lewis would soon lind it to his interest to send back the money he induced these poor people to send him by his "green goods" methods."
