APPLES HAVE BEEN DISTURBING ELEMENT Apples, one of the basis of the great development in the Pacific Northwest have since the beginning of the world been disturbing elements, says Frank G. Carpenter, in an issue of the Sun day Baltimore American. Below submited the introduction to Mr. Car penter's apple article: "1 write of the Big Red Apple. It is creating almost as much trouble for us an didZthatnntolwhich .Mother Eve, at the advice of the snake, sank her pearly teeth when she lost us the Garden of Eden. It is more precious man three golden apples which grew in the garden of IleBperides, and for which Hercules upheld the globe on his shoulders when he sent old Atlas to get them. That was the second time tlmt the apple upset the world, A third was when Juno, Venus and Minerva contended as to their beauty for the golden apple offered by Pans, the grafter, who, being bribed by Venus with Helen of Trov. thus brought about the Jong ten-year war which laid that citv in ashes. tuven the Bible speaks of apples of gold in pitchers of silver. Weil, that is what we are having in some parts oi our country, ine apple crop is revolutionizing whole districts. It has it ted the price of lands to the clouds and has made it possible for the clod hopper to walk upon velvet. What could you think of a country where nearly every farmer owns his automobile, where his house is lighted by electricity and he has water on tan: where scoresof familiesjgo every year to Southern California to get awav from the cold, and where you cannot throw a stone without striking a man who has money in the bank? That. I am told at the Department of Agricul ture, is the condition of a half dozen different districts in the Pacific North west. "lane tne Mooa Kiver Valley, in Oregon, where the apples and pump' kins are of about the same size! Orch ard land there is worth from $500 to ?1,000 an acre." Scotch Lassies Like Good Apples. J. R. Shelton, who placed in each box of his apples last year a postal card descriptive of the Hood River Valley and asked the consumers of the fruit to write what they thought of it recently received the following from Miss K. Henderson, of Paisley, Scot land: "My father being one of the biggest buyers in the Glasgow markets for the last twenty years, I have naturally seen great quantities of apples. 1 think for size, flavor and color the equnl v your apples have never been see:, n, Scotland before. They were quite a novelty for the people here. Western Oregon Adopted to Flax. Portland was visited by an Eastern flax expert the past week, who ex pressed suprise that more attention is not paid to this crop in Oregon. He praised the quality of the flax he found here as being superior to that luund elsewhere, either in this country ur abroad and farmers generally through out Western Oregon will grow Max with profit.
