of rosea, other plants, trees and Vines,

of ripe fruit, I asked about them and
learned that they wore edible. The
mistress of the place said she allowed
the berries to remain on for the birds
in winter, whin it sometimes gets
pretty cold here. .She also told n
that she bins suet in winter, chops
up and puts it at the base of the tree
fcr the birds that stay and come down
from Alaska -just as we are doing at
home in Illinois! 1'erhaps a list of the

Portland Quintette Victorious.
Tho Jefferson High School basketball
team won a sweeping victory here last
Friday night over the Hood River
school. The game, which was played
at the old Armory building and which
drew a big crowd of spectators, result
ed in a score of 2iS to 11 in favor of the
Portland lads. The Hood Kiver boys
assert that their failure to make a
better showing i.i due to lack of coach
ing. They play a good individual game
but lack systematic work. The Jeffer
son siuad, which was composed of a
huskv lot of youths, was Duke, Mur
phy, Vos.pi r, West, Anderson, Karl,
Ashworth and Catterlin. The Hood
Kiver line was Morse, center; E.
Franz and Shay, forwards; and Shep
pard and Lewis, guards.
The local team will play a number
of l'ortland school teams during the
months of February. Contests are
planned with Lincoln and Portland
Academy and another with Jefferson.
The high school quintet licked the
Jelferson boys by a large score last
season.
Burned Car Destroys Soys.
Whole companies of soldiers and
countless animals, wild and domestic,
perished at Havre, Mont., last week,
when a mail car on the Great Northern
Uailroad took fire between Havre and
Great Falls. All the casualties were
due to the progressiveness of Santa
Claus in abandoning the old reliable
reindeer team for the swifter light
ning express, says a dispatch.
The fact that tho soldiers were of
tin and the animals of wood will soften
only parially the grief of the settlers
children to whom the Christmas pack
ages were mailed by basern friends.
Kijtlit Carloads in One Day.
Last Friilay was hay day at the
O.-W. K. & N. freight station. Eight
carloads were switched into the local
siding at one time. Hood Kiver or
chardiats find the purchase of more
feed stuff than usual this winter be
cause of the destructive, unexpected
rain last September, when large
amounts of hav were destroyed in
different parts of the valley.

Mrs. Margaret J. Martin, long

Warden William L. Finley, on his re
cent visit at Washington, D. C, the
government hag been persuaded to

In the northwestern part of the state

to the state as an elk reserve. The
matter of location, however, has not

Wasson Buys Additional Land.
