The arrangement is the forerunner ! to a new fast train from Portland to i Chicago, the intention being in the nearjfuture, according to local officials, to put on a lightning express which will cut down the running time be twecneight and nine hours. 1 he change in schedule resulted in the yellow cars of the Milwi ukee con puny being brought into the Union station in Portland Tuesday for the lirs-t time in history. The change has necessitated the construction of new equipment in everything but color with the standard equipment of the Ham man line cars. I his new equipment will be handled from Chicago to Port land without change at Omaha. Civil Service Commission announces an examination on August 3, 11112, for the position of forest clerk, (male) to Becure eligibles to fill vacan cies as they may occur at an entrance salary of $110(1 or 1200 in the Forest Service. Application for this examin ation must have a knowledge of sten ography, typewriting, and the elements of bookkeeping, and have had at leaBt one year's actual experience in clerical work in a business office. The age limits are 18 to 40 years. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in se curing eligibles for these positions, and all qualilied persons are urged to make application for and take the coming examination. Squaw Uses Invalid Chair Another evidence of the civilization of the redman was furnished Pendleton when a crippled squnw, clad in the usual blanket, appeared on the streets in an invalid chair, says a dispatch from that city. In her lap she carried her papoose strapped to her back, while another woman pushed the chair. A number of squaws have adopted the white woman's mode of wheeling their young in gocarts, but this is the first time the invalid chair has found ac ceptance among the local Indians.
