TIIE WFST SIDE STl DItS Because of tbe fact that they will create an interest in the prwluctn-r of hogs and Rrlen products and tliu. result in greater diversity of uruwir.u things in the valley, the subjects that the members of the Wot Side Im provement club are discuKsir.jj at their meetings should be of great benefit t. themselves as well as to the valley ! a whole. Chickens, hog raising, truck gardening and potuto culture th district will never export very inurl: of such products, shouldn't ixpeet to, However, the orchardists of the coin munity should see to it that they do not have to import too much of the things that they need for their tulile l!ut few ranchers lack the ground 01 which to keeD a cow and thn natch fn aoil on which to grow her feed. Many do, and all should have enough chick ens to suddIv their own tables. And every one ought to raise his own gar den truck. The rancher that isn't growing his own peas, beans, turnip? beets and cabbage is missing half the pleasure of ranching. Perhaps Hood Kiver people will never ship any swine to the l'ortland packing plants. They would be foolisdi to try it. but they can raise a pig or two and have roast pork occasionally from their own herds. The potato production hits grown here very rapid ly. It has been in the past and will be this year, a great source of revenue. Many un fortunate little fellows and daring lads died from the effects of tetanus or suf fered with mangled hands or injured eyes after the glorious day wan over. The sane Fourth prevails now over the moat of the, country. Chicago tried it this year and her people are shaking hands because of the possibility it gives of enjoying the day in peace and quiet and without the usual aftermulh of agony from fires and injuries. Hood River's celebration was of the sane nature. Young and old were given opportunity to vent their enthus iasm in cheers and athletic sports. The day passed quickly and plensantly, the throngB crowding the street, bumping into each other and becoming better acquainted. When evening came all, comfortably tired, watched the georg cuus display of fireworks. And when on Friday the new day be gan, business man and rancher began work with renewed spirit and prepared for tasks in a more cheerful frame of mind. But few wanted to apply the toes of their right feet to themselves as they scratched at right ears on swollen heads in commemoration of ton much conviviulism. Such events are good for all com munities. They result in the peuplo Retting together in large cruwdH and getting out of the rut that our work sometimes gets us In. They breed good cheer and moro of a feeling of friendship among neighbors. ENJOYING OUR SCENERY In a few short weeks the cultivation of the orclmrdH and the lust spraying for the codling moth will have been finished and the owners of the beauti ful tracts will begin to think of recre ations in the hills in the virgin forenU along the mountain streams. Th mid-summer Beason Is here. Hood Kiver people probably enjoy their seen ery and the charming surroundings more at this season of tho year than at any other luue. Anemiy parties are leaving for the beautiful Lost Lake re gion to spend weeks there camped by the beautiful I. like tiranch mid enjoy ing the unsurpassed Fishing. A number of the Hood Kiver peopl will join the Maznmas this year and spend a short time with them in their camp near Cloud Cap Inn. The club, which has for its purpose; the explora tion and exploitation of Northwestern scenery, and especially that of tin mountains, has invited local people to join them. The Mazama club is going to cele brate its birthday on the evening of Friday, July li). The north side of Mount Hood, where the itlea of band ing together to enjoy and explore the mountain scenery had its inception.will glow from the flames of several hnn dred pounds of red lire, which will bi ignited that night. So don t get frightened that evening and think the old mountain is In eruption. Little hoys that would have too much fun with firecrackers on the Fourth should read the warning of little George Wallace Kidder, who lost his right hand at Tarkdale Thursday most 1 1 f i . 1 v ever j'trfon:;. l i The wotk h:.s vi. .on eif I'.i.y hurt. Fruit is all-impor tant, to be sure, but hay means some thing substantial. The Oregonian. Don't you "Hello Hill!" land? hear the echo of the coining up from J'urt Japs Buy Big Farm Handing together and calling their organization the Hood Kiver Farming M., a number or local Japanese have purchased from Sherman Frank his ;!0 acre orchard in the Oak Grove district, paying for the tract a sum of $20, 000. The principal stockholders ot the Jap anese orchard company are Niguma P.ros., who have operated a mercan tile store in the city for a number of years. The new owners have taken possesion of the place, which is set to trees of an age ranging rfom two to four years. ISIG DEE DITCH HAS BEEN FINISHED The , big dilch of the Dee l'ower Si Irrigation Co., which will water acres of excellent red shot soil that is ready for improvement betwei n the main stream and thu West Fork of Hood Kiver, has been completed. The ditch is six miles in length and draws its source of supply lrom the West Fork above the point where the Lake liranch empties into that stream. A fertile portion of the valley lies in lietween the two streams of the river aome thriving young orchards, among them the pear orchard ot "tasli Jones, of l'ortland, are located in this section. And numerous improvements are progressing here on the lands logged oil tiy the Oregon I. number Co. SCOTCH READINGS M PLEASING One of the most pleasing and sue eessuil or the year s social events was the reception given at the lleiihronner hall Tuesday night, when Mr. anil Mis. Lrnest C. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Frank I). Deem resented Mrs. Kath- eriue Oliver-McCoy, who is well known throughout the cnuntiv for tier rendi tions of Scotch dialect readings. The big hall room was artistically decor ated with potted plants, ferns and cut lloweis bunked in corners and in beautiful botpiets on tables. If the roof had been removed and the guests had been, able to have beheld the stars, the hall would have had every appearance of a roof garden. The guests, who numbered more than a hundred, as they sat in groups around the room were entertained by songs rendered by Mrs. Deem, Mis. Ralph Knot, and Mrs. Charles lleuney, ac companied by Mr. Knot, Mr. Wuesl and Miss Grace Carter. The musical selections vveie followed by the'read- ings of Mrs. McCoy, which for their true Scotch characterization were de cidedly entertaining. The delicious rein slimerts that were served after the leading consisted (if ice cream, cake and salted almonds. Mis Hrrcl Ciirtan, vvliolms Icon tak ing the Domestic Science and nit c iursi at ). A. Land Shows Create luleicst Commercial hod-'cs of the state are showing an interest ui the collection of Oregon exhibits to lc shown this win ter at the land slow of the middle west. In response to a call sent out by Manager Chapman, of the Develop ment I cache, many outside sections have been heard from, each nreinisinu to collect samples of the t est products grown there tins season and it seems a good collection is assured.
