Tney propose to pay 10 and 11 per
(out dividends on their stock, which
must be admitted is good, and probably
poHHihlo to do. However, it must also
tie admitted that it is not altogether
the idea of getting a man in on the
ground floor that makes them so desir
ous of selling him stock, as the fact
that they beileve if he has stock he
will buy from them and he will wield
a great influence in getting his -nigh
burn to buy also from them. In other
words, the owner of stock will pay his
own dividends.
Why buy stock in a concern that will
oe very anxious to sill you goodu
whether you own stock or not, and take
the chances with your money? You
can always kick if your goods are
wrong, to the man you bought from,
hut if you are a stockholder you will
not be supposed to kick at yourself,
will you? The theory in the mail order
business is that most people like to
say, "Yes, 1 gut it in Chicago,'.' or "1
sent to Spokane for it." You cannot
stop, the man who has money to spend
from spending it when and where he
pleases.
1 hut is his business because it is his
money. Hut the place for a Hood
Kiver man to spend his money is in
Hood Kiver, every time he can. There
are a lot of pitfalls in the mail order
catalog. If you never looked one over,
take a look and see how many things
there are you would like to have.
Keep looking and some day you will

than you can buy it off of the shelf of
the local merchant. All right.. Get the
oiiler pad and make out your order.
Then comes the thought mightn't you
just as well get a few more things in
on the same freight bill ; you pay on a
hundred pounds whether your shipment
weighs the hundred or not. Tack on
the other things. What if it does take
the ready cash, and the local merchant
who has been carriVng the little bal
ance has to wait a ilttle longer? Sift
the purchase dovyn and see whether on
the whole with the freight tacked on.

which wants its money in advance, or
the out of town house that insists

made $1K00 land? Where would that
$1HUU land be without a town at hand?
W hich can move the easier, the mer
chant with his stock, or the rancher
with his $1H00? Cooperation is a great
thing, but why cooperate with the fel
low tafar olf when there is a chance
to cooperate at home? Cooperation is
a little hard to handle, just as hard as
if there wasn't any cooperation at
hand. Ask the Apple Growers' Union
if cooperation is not a difficult prob
lem. Celling right down to facts, endless
opportunities can be found right at
home, right here in Hood lover, for
all the investments a . mun cares to
make, if one will but open their eyes.
I wonder how much stock one tould
sell in a small factory proposition in
Hood Kiver, something that would turn
a payroll loose in tins town every
week, and which would serve to looson
things up a little in more ways than
one. I just wonder.-
The truth is, the local merchant has
been, and always will be, imposed upon
mightily in the way of credit. When
you want to pay cash, ask what the
discount is, and if you can, compare
the 'goods with the mail order stutf.
My opinion as one of the original Soci

home any time you want to show a
disposition to pay right up, anil ou

As long as one has the cash, he can
buy where he pleases, but in the long
run its the local merchant who does all
the favors, both in the extending of
credit, often without reason, and in
hustling around to accommodate you in
more ways than one. Isn't it so.
