that there is a lot of money going out

that ought to he kept in Oregon, end
that if the farmers of Oregon would
patronize an Oregon mail order house.
Hie money would be kept at home, and

farmers buying tock. because it would
he ued in the development work going
on in Oregon, in which the farmer is
so greatly interested. '

be admitted that it is not altogether
the idea of getting a man in on the

wordn, the owner of stock will pay nis
own dividends.
Why buy stock in a concern that wih.

whether you own slock or not, and take
the chances with your money? You
can always kick if your goods are
wrong, to the man you bought from,
but if you are a stockholder you will
not be supposed to kick at yourself,
will you? The theory in the mail order
business is that most people like to
say, "Yen, I got it in Chicago." or "1
sent to .Spokane for it." Vou cannot
stop, the man who has money to spend
from spending it when and where he
pleases.
That is his husiuesB because it is his
money. Hut the place for a Hood
Kiver man to spend his money is in
Hood Uivcr, every time he can. There
are a lot of pitfalls in the mail order
catalog. If you never looked one over,
take a look and see how many things
there are you would like to have.
Keep looking and some day you will
find something listed much cheaper
than you can buy it off of the shelf of
the local merchant. All right. Get the
order pad and make out your order.
Then comes the thought mightn't you
just as well get a few more things in
on the same freight bill ; you pay on a
hundred pounds whether your shipment
weighs the hundred or not. Tack on
the other things. What if it does take
the ready cash, and the local merchant
who has been carriVng the little bal
ance has to wait a ilttle longer? Sift
the purchase down and see whether on
the whole with the freight tacked on,
you saved the money you thought you
did.
Then consider the local merchant a
little. Who was it that extended credit
that hepled to put many a man on his
feet'' Was it the mail order house
which wants its money in advance, or
the out of town house that insists
when it givea credit that 60 days is the
limit? Here in Ifood River who was
it that paid for the advertising that
made $1HU0 land? Where would that
1HIH land be without a town at hand?
W hich can move the earner, the tner
chant with his stock, or the rancher
with his f 1800? Cooperation is a great
thing, but why cooperate with the fel
low 4far off when there is a chance
to cooperate at home? Cooperation is
a little hard to handle, juat us hard as
if there wasn't any cooperation at
hand. ABk the Apple Growers' Union
if cooperation is not a difficult prob
lem. Getting right down to facts, endless
opportunities can be found right at
home, right here in Hood Kiver, for
all the investments a man cares to
make, if one will but open their eyes.
I wonder how much stock one could
sell in a Hinull factory - proposition in
Hood River.something that would turn
a payroll loose in this town every
week, and which would serve to loosun
things up a little in more ways than
one. ' 1 just wonder.-
The truth is, the local merchant has
been, and always will I.e. imposed upon
mightily in the way of credit. When
you want to pay cash, ask what the
discount is, and if you can, compare
the goods with the mail order stuff.
My opinion as one of the original Soci
ety of Credit lm posters is, that you
will get your money's worth right at
home any time you want to show a
disposition to pay right up, and uu
can see the goods, have them wrapped
up mid go home with Uiem, without any
fornuilitiu. of buying a post ollice oiilei
blank, bank draft,.- or express order,
calling at the depot, and ma try other
little things; then again, if they are
not right the. local merchant is very
handy for exchange purposes.
As long as one has the cash, he can
buy where he pleases, but in the long
run its the local merchant who does all
the favors, both in the extending of
credit, often without reason, and in
hustling around to accommodate you in
more ways than one. Isn't it so,

Nichol the ranch of Thomas Shere in
the Barrett district The consideration
of the transaction was $7,600, Mr.
