Good Roads and Good Hotels (Oregonian.) Construction by Multnomah and ad joining counties of the Columbia river hiuhwav will aia coweriuny in me ue- velonment of Oregon's attractions for tourists. This class or travelers is eenerallv accustomed to the comforts of life, and traveling for pleasure, ex pects to find them, and is willing to pay for them. There are two essentials to the comfort of tourists-good roads and good hotels. They will not visit places which can be reached only by an Hffdnmnc iournev over bad roads and where the hotel accommodation ia of the moflt primitive sort. The Multnomah county commission ers have therefore acted wisely in em Dloving an expert road-builder to con struct the Columbia river highway and deciding on a h ghwav solid, perma nent roadway. Such a highway, built on easy grades aiong a route wnicn will afford a good view of the wonder ful Columbia river gorge, wouia at tract tourists and every tourist who travels it will, by telling of the trip, bring a'score of others. At convenient intervals along the road first cIsbs ho tels should be built, affording every comfort and convenience. Oregon is well supplied with such hotels in its principal cities and towns, but sadly acks them in the sparsely settled and wild sections where the greatest scenic hnfliities are to be found. Multnomah county, as the wealthiest and most populous in the state, does well to- establish a standard to which other counties can work. Every com munitv has an equal interest in coming up to this standard, for there is not a part of the state which would not at tract travel, once the facilities are furnished. With main highways along the Columbia from the eastern line of the state to Astoria, up the Willamette and to the California line, and through eastern Oregon from north to south and from eeet to west, Oregon would soon have a road system on which au tomobiles would swarm. The most remote parts of the state would be made accessible by branch roads. Citizens of Switzerland, the pleasure ground of Europe, have admitted that in the Columbia river gorge and the CnHcmle mountains Oregon has scenic beauties which Burpass those of Switz erland. But Switzerland has an ad mirable svstem of roads and hotels. By duplicating it, Oregon may be made the playground of America, and at the same time the agricultural and indus trial development of the state may be greatly promoted. Tips On Tities A MAN eame rushing into onr office ' and wanted an Abstract in a hurry. He seemed to think we kept them on band and could pass tbe one he wanted right over to him. It was the first time he had- ever required an Abstract. He had an opportunity to make in investment which gave promise of rich returns. It was an unusual chance. He had no ready money so bad gone to his bank to get it by placing a mortgage upon his land. The bank, according to its cus tom, demanded an Abstract and re ferred him to as. Now the man had lived on this land. He had paid gcod money for it. He held a Warranty Deed. He thought it was his. It was, but there was a "Cloud upon the Title" which had to be cleared be fore he could obtain anv money upon his land. There were defects in the instruments as recorded which could be remedied only by a decree of the Court. Tbis required time. Mean. while the opportunity for the promis ing investment bad passed. This is not fiction. It is not even exceptional. It is the sort of thing that is occunng repeatedly. You own land in Hood River County. You intend, some day, to have it covered by an Abstract. Why Not Now? There is nothing to be gamed by delay and may be much to lose. It matters not what you think about your land, your title ia only as good aa the records show. The business of the Ab stricter is to give you the record of vour title. Some people seem afraid to enquire into tne title to their land, mey prefer to play "oetnch ' and try to think there can be nothing the trouble with it. When the day comes, as it surely will, tbat they must have an Abstract they are disappointed that they have to wait for the Abstracter to do his work. But thev can't blame the abstracter. It takes time to pre pare a correct and complete Abstract Besides there are always other hurry orders ahead which must be finished before new work is begun. It is even more annoying to learn that the title you thought good is imperfect. The trouble may be slight and of a nature which could be readily removed, but still sumcient to cause an exasperat ing delay at a time when one wishes to make a quick sale or raise monev upon a mortgage. Be wise enough to have your Ab stract made NOW, while there is no urgent need lor prompt action. Come in and talk to us about it, we may be able to make a few suggea tions of benefit to vou.
