S^l THE POULTRY YARD < Warmth and Laying. Every farmer and poultryman knows that when there are several days of very cold weather the hens stop lay ing, while during the warm weather they all seem to begin laying at once. The fact is one which is a problem to some, as it is not always due to the kind of food or the quantity that the eggs are reduced in number or in creased. When the quarters are warm in the winter and the fowls are as com fortable as they are in summer, the hens will not be so quickly affected by the changes in the weather, but there is no flock, no matter how well man aged, that does not fall off in eggs to a certain extent when the weather is severely cold. This is probably the in stinct of the wild hen, though only par tially so, which prompts her to bring forth her young only under extremely favorable conditions, but it is safe to claim that as the hen will work under summer conditions the best mode of securing eggs is to have summer con ditions in the poultry house all the winter. Strictly Fresh Eggs. Some dealers will sell all eggs as "strictly fresh" if they can do so. They carefully "candle" the eggs received, and the majority of customers are un able to distinguish the good from the inferior. But customers will buy the best when they know the eggs to be fresh, and it is in catering to the cus tomer's wants that a trade in choice eggs can be established almost any where. It is not necessary to ship eggs to a great distance to sell them, as there is a market the whole year round for strictly choice eggs, but the farmer or poultryman will have to take pains to let the customers know all the facts and his work will then be more than half done. There is always a higher price for the best article. A Mode of Preserving Droppings. There is nothing that parts with its ammonia sooner than poultry manure, and a short period only is necessary for it to deteriorate. In the process of drying the evaporating moisture has tens the loss of volatile mater. The TWO—RANCH AND RANGE—Smith fat acid bears a direct relation to the alcohols, and are capable of forming compounds, which result where the droppings are kept moist with suds (for they must never be allowed to be come dry), and during the time the changes are occurring in the mass the insoluble portions are reduced and the whole rendered more available as plant food, as well as retaining its val ue as a fertilizing agent. Lice-Proof Nest. A good lice-proof nest, and one that is cheap, may be made from an old kerosene oil barrel. Cut out two staves between the middle hoops. Cut the barrel in two, exactly in the mid dle. Make a board cover for each half and there will then be two nests that the lice will give wide berth. The barrels do not cost over 75 cents, and will last one year without giving an other soaking of kerosene, and may be used continuously if well sprinkled with kerosene every spring and fall. I enclose to you an order for four boxes of Lee's Egg Maker. I get from three to four dozen eggs per day, while my neighbors get one. I had a fine tur key almost dead with cholera when I sent to you for my Germozone and Egg Maker, and I just put the Germozone in the drinking water, and today he is just as fine as ever. I just simply could not raise chicks without your remedies. They are just wonderful. I never had so many pullets to lay in the fall. Every one admires my chicks, they are so pretty, with bright red combs. I. will close, wishing you the best of success for the new year and a long life full of prosperity. MRS. ROBT. H. There may be other remedies just as good, but it really seems to me there can be nothing much better. I have been using it on a flock of hens that were the sickest lot I have seen in many a day.
