man not only lured* for eggs, but
feeds for ej;,us. The incompetent one
does neither, and he fails with any
breed.
Geese Raising.
It !h perhaps unnecessary to call
the attention of the farmers to the
profit from a flock of well kept goese,
or of the value of their assistance in
ridding a patch of ground of grass,
but. the raising of this class of fowl
is not given the attention it really de
serves. The fat goose is a luxury en
joyed only by those accustomed to thia
uVlicacy, but thousands have heard ex
tolled in song the excellence of "goose
stuffed with sage and onions."
Dressed geese bring a good price,
especially in the cities during the Jew
ish holiday period of the fall months,
and the profits are fully as large as
from the raising of turkeys. Young
turkeys are very delicate, and large
numbers die soon aft^r being hatched,
while geese are hardy, and both old
and yourg will thrive on a grass plat
or pond that cannot be used for any
other purpose. Geese will breed for
many seasons, and a flock of Toulouse,
or some other large vriety, will yield
a considerable income every year.
Where fowls are affected with roup
or any form of cold one of the first
thing to be done is to-give a physic
(one-half teaspoonful Epsom salts to
an adult fowl). There is little use to
doctor for colds without the physic.
Any of.the so-called break up cold tab
lets contain a laxative and usually
quinine.
The practice of egg eating is often
fornud by a lack of exercise and over
feeding. Give the birds a little lean
meat occasionally and make them
work in the litter for their grain and
the habit will soon cease. If the nests
are located in a darkened place in the
coops, the egg eating habit will not be
so readily formed.
Did you know that a poor hen never
sets? If you do not believe it just ex
amine a hen when she begins to get
broody and you will invariably find her
very fat. The coat of fat is nature's
provision for the abstinence of three
weeks setting. If you want your hens
to lay do not let them get too fat.
