BUY WAR BONDS EVERY PAY DAY Ecusta Paper Corporation THE SOUTHERN NEWS Detroit NAACP Membership Drive Brings $21,000 DETROIT, Mich.—The NAACP membership drive here close dthis week maintaining Detroit’s stand ing’ as headquarters for the larg est branch in the country. Mrs. Daisy Dampkin, NAACP field sec retary who conducted the cam paign, commented on the over whelming loyalty of Detroiters to the NAACP, saying that even at the height of the rioting prospec tive NAACP members pushed their way through street mobs to the Warren avenue office to pay membership fees and that others called repeatedly to see if the martial law which barred the final mass meeting has been rescinded. Dr. James McClendon, Detroit Branch president and Gloster Cur rent, executive secretary of the branch, assisted Mrs. Lampkin in the drive, the most successful ever held in any city in the United States. $21,000 has been reported despite the fact that the cam paign period coincided in the be ginning with the NAACP emer gency war conference held here early in June and closed in the midst of the rioting which swept Detroit from June 21 to 33. The Detroit branch is continu ing its efforts to restore order and normalcy to the city and to cor rect the reasons for the riot, Dr. McClendon stated this week. Members of the branch’s legal staff and Thurgood Marshall, NA ACP special counsel have an nounced that they will defend with out funds any perosns who were ‘arrested in connection with the rioting who appeal to them for legal assistance. tWar Bonds should mean something more to you than just “a good sound invest ment.” Figure it out yourself.
