Detroit NAACP
Membership Drive
Brings $21,000
DETROIT, Mich.—The NAACP
membership drive here close dthis
week maintaining Detroit’s stand
ing’ as headquarters for the larg
est branch in the country. Mrs.
Daisy Dampkin, NAACP field sec
retary who conducted the cam
paign, commented on the over
whelming loyalty of Detroiters to
the NAACP, saying that even at
the height of the rioting prospec
tive NAACP members pushed their
way through street mobs to the
Warren avenue office to pay
membership fees and that others
called repeatedly to see if the
martial law which barred the final
mass meeting has been rescinded.
Dr. James McClendon, Detroit
Branch president and Gloster Cur
rent, executive secretary of the
branch, assisted Mrs. Lampkin in
the drive, the most successful ever
held in any city in the United
States. $21,000 has been reported
despite the fact that the cam
paign period coincided in the be
ginning with the NAACP emer
gency war conference held here
early in June and closed in the
midst of the rioting which swept
Detroit from June 21 to 33.
The Detroit branch is continu
ing its efforts to restore order and
normalcy to the city and to cor
rect the reasons for the riot, Dr.
McClendon stated this week.
Members of the branch’s legal
staff and Thurgood Marshall, NA
ACP special counsel have an
nounced that they will defend with
out funds any perosns who were
‘arrested in connection with the
rioting who appeal to them for
legal assistance.
