SEWARD IS THE I GATEWAY TO THE BEST PORTION OF CENTRAL ALASKA Through this harbor passes nearly all the traffic of the vast region lying north of Cook inlet and between the two mountain ranges which bound the Susitna valley, an area as large as one of the great state's of the Middle West. In the Near Future | Through the extension of the Alaska Central railroad, now building northward from Seward, the territory tributary to the town as the chief seaport of the southern coast will gradually ex pand until it embraces the Tanana and upper Kuskokwim, each a region of imperial extent and resources. Seward Already controls the trade of the ^ entna sold mining dis trict, which old Alaska miners pronounce one of the coming bonanza camps of the territory. It controls the trade of the numerous mining | camps along Cook inlet and its arms. From it start the prospectors who are constantly pene trating and exploring the interior between Cook inlet and the Tatiana in the search for rich depos its of the metals which abound in all its hills and streams. Seward Outfits Miners For all this territory. From this town leads the best route to the new bonanza fields. They are more accessible than any other great disti ict of Alaska, an important factor in their development. Limitless Coal Deposits lie at Seward's back door. I hey have been ex amined and analyzed by the best experts and rated by them with the best bituminous coal of the Atlantic coast. In another year this coal will be hauled to tide water over the Alaska Central railroad and can be mined in quantity to furnish steam to all the ships that sail the North Pacific. In a few years it will furnish coke to smelters which will be erected at Seward to reduce the copper ores of that bonanza field. Prince William sound, whose richest deposits are within a few hours sailing. The Longest Railroad in operation in Alaska has Seward for its ocean terminus and its track lengthens each month. On the finest townsite in Alaska, at the head of the best harbor on the Alaska coast, ice-free every day in every year, Seward is building. The town has water works, electric lighting, sewerage; and its development is based upon exhaustless re sources. FIGHTING TO AVOID ASYLUM Contest in Thaw Case Now to Prevent His Confinement for Life as Insane. B- CcMa to Th*> Dally Gateway. New York, Feb. )6 — Thaw’s at torneys will bend every effort in the remainder of his trial for the murder of Stanford While to show that he is now sane, having done the killing un der the stress of emotional insanity. District Attorney Jerome has tacitly admitted that he is willing to concede that Thaw has always been insane, hut will light to have him confined in the asylum for criminal insane. This is practically all there is left to the Thaw ease. It is not believed that th<' jury will convict Thaw of murder, as enough evidence of general mental : berration and of provocation has been introduced by the defense to create sympathy for the defendant and and a r* tsonahle doubt as to his re sponsihilty. Thaw himself has been indeadh fear all the time since his arrest tint he may he committed to the asylum for life,and has repeatedly asserted that he prefers death in the electric chair. TO CONTRADICT EVELYN THAW — Jerome Will Produce Witnesses to Discredit Story of De fendant’s Wife. Bj Cabi« to The Daily Gateway. New York, Feb. 11 — District At torney Jerome will center his efforts in the Thaw case to the introduction of witnesses to discredit Mrs. Evelyn Thaw’s story of persecution by Stan ford White. It is claimed that many parts of it can be absolutely contra dicted and the theory of the prosecu tion is that the testimony was concoct ed as the only hope of making a de fense for Thaw. A bulletin was issued yesterday stating that Mrs. Thaw had suddenly become mysteriously ill and that she would be unable to resume the witness stand today. This morning it was an nounced that hercondition had improv ed and she may be in court this after noon. __ Testifies Thaw Is Insane New York, Feb. 14—Dr. Evans, testi fying as a medical expert for the de fense in the Thaw trial, stated that he had made an examination of Harry Thaw and found a depression on his head indicating that he is insane. Dr. Evans testified also that Thaw’s heart action indicates liability to emotional insanity. THAW JUROR’S WIFE DIES AND TRIAL IS ADJOURNED New York, Feb. 15—The wife of Juror Bolton in the Thaw case, died last night and the trial is adjourned until Monday. Bolton was allowed to visit his wife twice during her illness. To Keep Hot Stuff Out of Malls Washington, I). C., Feb. 15—Con gressman Wilson of Illinois introduced a resolution in the house today auth orizing the president to exclude from the mails newspapers which print re volting details of the Thaw trial and similar cases. Object to Printing Thaw Story Chattanooga, Tenn., Eeb. 11—Wo men’s clubs of Tennessee met today and adopted a protest against printing the details of the Thaw trial in the news papers, urging that the accounts are demoralizing to the sanctity of the home. Oliver Crimp, an earnest young man just out of college, went to a thriving young city in Indiana and started a newspaper. Oliver had no capital but youth, health, strength, industry, and an am i bition to succeed. Moreover, be had no business experence. Knowing these facts, his friends unanimously predicted that within six months his newspaper office would be in the hands of the sheriff. It was.—Chicago Tribune. By Cable to The Dally Gateway. New York, Feb. 12 ITnited States District Attorney Henry A. Stimson of the Southern district of New York served notice last night on all news papers published in his district that '.f they print the details of testimony in the Thaw trial which describe social offenses he will present complaints aga'nst them to the grand jury, charg ing them with ciiculalingobscene mat ter though the mails in contravention of the postal laws. Mrs. Kvol.vn Thaw was able to ap-I pear in court yesterday afternoon for; further examination. She identified I the note which she passed to her hus band in the Martin cafe when Stan ford White came in at dinner a few hours before the murder. This is the note reading ‘‘The B — is here," and is claimed to have had influence in in flaming Thaw to the point of shooting White. Alter Mrs. Thaw’s direct ex amination was concluded court adjourn ed, as Jerome did not wish to begin the cross-examination until the wit ness became stronger. ADAMS DEFENSE CARRIES POINT Presiding Judge Takes Drawing of Special Venire Away from Hostile Sheriff. By Cable to Tbe Dally Gateway. Wallace, Idaho, Feb. 14 — The de fense in the Steve Adams murder trial won its fight to prevent the sheriff from drawing a special venire of ju rors for service in the case. It is claimed by the defense that the sheriff was elected for the specific purpose of convicting Adams, that being an issue in the campaign. Upon the exhaustion of the regular panel today a special venire was order ed but the matter was taken out of the hands of the sheriff by the court, and the sheriff will have nothing to do with the drawing. Charges Job to Fix Jury Wallace, Idaho, Feb. 13—The prose cution in the trial of Steve Adams fora murder committed several years ago, created a sensation today by charging in open court that the Western Feder eration of Miners has raised a large corruption fund to save Adams by fix ing the jury. The state promised to lay documentary evidence before the court before evening. Only one juror had been secured. Adams is the man who is alleged to have confessed complicity in the mur der of Ex-Gov. Steunenberg and to have implicated the Federation in that and other crimes. He has since denied that he made the purported confession and it is claimed that his counsel in the present trial are paid by the Fed eration.
