Valdez, March ."> Gambling in the third judicial district of Alaska is dead; dunce halls are a thing of the past, and w mien will not he permitted in saloons. Such practically is the an nouncement of District Attorney Har lan. At the opening of the distict court session yesterday Judge Wickersham, in his charge to the grand jury, speci fically directed it to make inquiry into the character of saloons of Valdez which had applications for renewals of lie-uses. Protests have been tiled against the renewal of some of these licenses on tlie ground that gambling an 1 dance halls were being conducted in the saloons. The applications and protests were turned over to the gram jury for investigation.
