NOVEMHKK *-.1907 SENDING PETS TO ALASKA It will not surprise any observing man if the cable story proves true that the president will piek an eastern man forJudge Wickersham s place on the Alaska bench. Very likely it will be some lawyer s clerk, whose patron wants to give him a boost. Pndoubled lv the man will be some politician's pot. That has been President Roose velt's rule in selecting federal judges. In his judicial appointments the president has displayed about as much judgment as a rabbit anil as much re gard for the dignity of the bench as a ward politician. Over and over again he has appointed cheap lawyers to the bench in great cities against whose selection almost the entire bar pro tested, and did so for no other appar ent reason than that it appeared to be good politics for Roosevelt. As an exception to his rule in choice of judges the president has kept Judge Wickersham on tin- bench, an act which met the approval of nine-tenths of the people of the judicial division to which the judge is assigned. Now that Judge Wickersham insist son resigning it may naturally be expected that the president will replace him by a legal tyro from east of the Alleghanies in stead of a capable Alaska man. The new strike on Valdez creek is another proof of the richness of the Susitna valley. \ aide/, creek is a tribuary of the Susitna river and placer claims in that district have yielded lame return-for a numdcr of years The shortest route to these diyyins is via Seward. the trip can be made from Took Inlet in one third the time and at half the evpen-e and tiuru ttiu K umi u is maue ii'om \ artcae. The prosecution always threatens the defense with Abe Ruef in the San Francisco graft trials but always forgets to put him on tbe stand. The Arctic Brotherhood will organ ize a women's auxiliary so that the ladies can break into the low jinks as well as the high jinks. “Alaskans in Seattle" are kindly taking charge of the forthcoming Alaska convention, as usual.
