Feeding Animals rou Fatteninc
There are, Wo think, few processes conducted
bv the fanner with K'ss economy or profit to
himself than that of fattening nnimnls; and
this it seems to us arises from the neglect of
u Tew plain principles. In the first place,
they are fed so as to make them grow fipely
instead of taking on fat; nnd in tho second,
their food is given to them tinground or un
cooked, neither of which conditions ought
to exist, where it is desirable to latten nni
mnls quickly, and of course, cheap nnd well.
The experiments of Mr Colman, show; clear
ly the astonishing difference in favor of cook
ing corn meal for hogs, upd it is scarcely
less conspicuous in other things. Swine
never should Iiuva more at a time than thei
ran eat, but they should hnve just ns much
ns they will eat, and hnve it fed to tht'in so
often, that there shall not be n- pretence for n
mngjo squeal. A good dry bed, plenty of
coolked food, and a little, brimstone or pound
ed charcoal, occasionally thrown into their
trough, seem to be requisite 16 fatten pork
rapidly. Some farmers feed their apples
nnd potatoes to their pigs raw ; we ore con
fident they would' riot do this, if they woulil
onco fairly .test the two methods of feeding
in that style, or cooked. Sour apples, when
cooked, are as good far swine as sweet ones ;
but raw, nre as decidedly inferior, makiiiri
the teeth sore, and furnishing too much ncid
to the stomach for the purpose of rapid
nutrition. It. is necessary to have good beef
and pork, but they should not in the tnakimr,
occasion a loss to the maker, tare and skill
will prevent this. Gen. Farmer.
