The "Xrwmli" Knleuiiti". A needed light lifts been thrown unon the "tramp" iniestion am liasis for legislation, by tho publication In the report of Chief Detect ive Stephenson of Massachusetts, of tho ex perience of two Massachusetts detectives who wero sent out last Beason to join the tramping fraternity. Here are a few extracts from the report : July 10. Lift Springfield, Very boon met two tramps, and wo immediately made in ipilries ns to onr prospects for getting food and lodgings whilo wo wero puvsulng our in vestigations. These men informed us tlint wo could get very littlo food by begging, eicopt. iug dry bread, and sometimes n littlo luilk ; that they generally stole what they got. 'I'lieso men wero Irish, n.l and -I." years of age, one a shoemaker by trade, nnd tho other a tailor j they could get work !f they desired, but pre ferred to trump i tl i-' "n,y worked v. hen they wanted money to get liquor, nud not then if they could steal it. One had tramped five and tho other eight years. Wo nil slept together in tho woods during tho night at n placo near lllandfonl, nud pnrtptl company in tho morn ing, after furnishing them with somo tobac co. July 11. Started from Klaudford toward ltussell j soon met a trump, a Frenchman full fill years of age. He had tmuipedabout eight years went with him. Ho said ho tramped through tho country during tho summer nud fall, going to ono of tho larger cities when tho eold weather came on, v. hero ho generally managed to get arrested for somo petty crimo for the purposo of getting u sentence that would keep him in confinement during the winter mouths. We gave hint some brend. Ho had with him a large aliso containing four bottles of gin among other things. This man was on tho road to Buffalo, N. Y. Slept during the night in llussell. July 12. Started from ltussoll at daybreak iu ft pouring raiif, soon went into a barn, whilo tho Frenchman went out to beg some food. He returned with n largo pieco of corned beef, which ho had stolen. July I.T. Left tho bnm quite early where wo had passed tho night; soon met threo tramps j went with them into tho woods, whero we found 11 more. Our party now numbered Of these, three vteiu German, two Dutchmen, ono Swede, ono Frenchman, thrco Americans, nud tho remainder Irish. They had been cuniped iu this place somo five days, subsisting principally upon chickens nud potatoes which had been stolen in tho night. Oouclndetl to remain with this gang for a time. July It. We divided into four squads, each of which was to take its turn in provid ing food for tho gang. The Germans went out to-day, nnd returned with a small pig, nine chickens, a quantity of eggs nnd bread, all of which, with tho exception pf tho bread, were stolen. They carried with them fish hooks and lines, which they used for catching chickens, simply by putting on a kernel of corn for bait. In many instances, when they have rum, they soak brend with it and feed the fowls, which nre soon in a condition to be et tliree men belonging to the other gangs, e kopt together on tho tramp, generally scp atiug when wo camo to villages, nud going i throuch sinclr. We laid in tho woods most jot tho day, getting plenty of food by beggiug and stealing. The young fellows find it dif ficult to get food of any description, but the old men seem to excite more compassion ; they generally have n pitiful story rendy for usj, gotten np without regard to truth. The usual question to the young tramp is, "Why don't you go to work?" They nlways pro. fess readiness to work, but generally give, as n trndo to which they arc accustomed to work, some occupation in which they nro suro no employment will bo offered in that locality. Ono of the gang stolo to-day a jug of bay rain out of n fnnuer's wagon, nil of which wus drank during tho night. Slept iu a bam. July Passed through Hinsdale very early. About two miles out wo met a gang of eight tramps, who said they wero on their wny to 1'ennsylvania to join tho railroad riots. They proposed to travel on the railroad tracks, separating and going singly through tho vil lages, stealiug rides on freight trains if possi ble, nnd expected to reach l'ennsylt nuia. in about n week. Left them, nud traveled until nearly midnight, when wo met four others who were also bound for the riots. Got n sup- Iter of them, consisting of roabted potatoes, ieef and hum, which they said they had got by begginjj. Olio of tho party was very well dressed, with plenty of cigars in his pocket. Ho wore n large, plain gold ring. Ao tried to get his confidence, but failed. August 1. Tho whole gang started on the tramp toward tho town of Washington ; we met another party of tramps in the woods about I'o miles from I'ittslield. In reply to the question as to what they wero up to. they said they wero waiting for n striko on the Boston nud Albany railroad ; that there were scattered about iu thnt country about 401) men, who were nil waiting to join tho strikers. These men uppenred ready for any plan of pillage and destruction that was proposed. 'The proposition made to burn the small depots on tho road would have been enrried into ef fect, excepting for our remonstrances, nud the urguinent Hint it would bo laid to the poor men who wero employed on tho road. Tho plan of soaplug tho rails at -various places, for the purpose of stopping the ears, was discuss ed i but, feeling sure tliere would be a strike, nothing wan attempted, they preferring to wait. During nil tho time we wero engaged in trampiug, wo made it our business, at the suggestion of tho chief detective, to ascertain whether it was the lack of employment that caused these people to become wanderers and vagruubi. Of the entire number with whom wo conversed, wo found but two who did not scout tho idea of goiug to work for tho pur pose of earning an hoiust livelihood ; nnd wo very much doubt if these two were ready to engage iu any laborious employment. Tb Klrnivnts of Ztlvrcianllle hucens. A littlo more than twenty-five years ago, (in when Boston contained only about 140,000 inhabitants, nnd au assessed valuation of J1K),000,000, thrco young merchants open ed a small jobbing store, in tho dry goods liuc, ou Milk street. They wero Eben D. Jor dan, B. L. Marsh, and Charles Marsh. They had but a small capital, comparatively, but they multiplied that luuuy times by their knowledge of tho business, their characters, courage, and thnt "genius for hard work" which is at tho bottom of all worthy success. They had three clerks and did tho rest them selves. Their trade was mostly in New Eng. land, and was done for cash only. Six years later they removed to larger quartern in Pearl street, nnd in 18H1 to Devonshire street, whero in lHt!5 their business hnd grown to ft total of from twenty to tweuty-ttircu millions n year, nnd four or fivo hundred employees wero en gaged. They had also, at this time, stores iu New York, Philadelphia nnd Baltimore, and thus established lines of trade that have been of great service to them, nnd of much value to Boston, since then. In IM'l they bought, the large retail storo of Geo. W. Warren A Co., on Washington nnd Avon streets tho s.tmo now used for their retail busiuess and conducted both stores. Partners have come in nud dropped out, but btill "Jordan, Marsh & Co.," have gone on, until their namo is the best known of uuy in Boston, nud their sales, iu tho wholesale nud retail stores, nro double and perhaps more nearly treble thoso of any other houso in New Euglaud. Their wholesale store, front ing on Bedford nud Kingston streets nnd Itowo court, is said to bo the finest jobbiug store lu America, There nro live floors, each with an nroa of 21,000 feet 2 acres in all and tho stock is complete in ail departments. Tho retail store is equally complete iu it way. and iu them both there nre employed froui twelve to fifteen hundred persons, according to tho season of the year. Aud to-day, when the Boston of 18.11 has grown to a population of nearly ;i.i(i,tnKi, wmi uu ussesseu property amounting to almost $800,000,000 with export trndo of $I.i,0iio,000, and imiwrts foot ing up to 70,000,000 ill cold value with equalled terminal advantages, aud greatly in creased railroad facilities, Uio houso of Jor thin, Murt.li A Co., maintains its position at the head of tho dry goodd trade. Enterprise moves tho world but it is not tho reckless, hap-hazard, uncontrolled or misdirected oner gy that brenks down ninety per cent, of dry goods merchants in every generation. It is comnosed of a brass cylinder about four inches iu diameter nnd about ten inches long, with nxles ten iiichcs long on which a thread is cut. coining from either end and passing through nut journals. To one of these nxles a cmnk is nltnchcd, by which the cylinder Is turned, moving either way ns the crank Is moved. This cylinder has small lines cut intoitaud running around its whole length, it. By tho side of tho c) lindtraud resting on it is a pin uttached to n vibrating pinto, over which is n mouthpiece with n small hole lend ing to tho plnte immediately over the hole. When the phonograph is to be used, n sheet of lend paper Is spread over tho cylinder, tho words or sounds to bo re-produced are nmde very close to the mouthpiece, and tho vibra tion in tho air occasioned by their utterance causes tho plato to move, nnd tho pin indents the lead paper upon tho cylinder, which, by tho way, is turned by moans of the crnuk dur ing the operation. Tho words being spoken, tho paper is indented by tho pin, and the crauk turns tho cylinder back to its starting point. A tunnel' is then placed over the mouthpiece. Mr. Edison used ono made of a plain piece of writing paper. Tho cylinder is then turned over tho samo space it originally traversed nnd the sounds are reproduced nc curately nnd enn bo henrd for scvernl foot nroundtho instrument, vnrying alwnys with tho loudness of tho touo in which the words wero spoken to the mnclilne. After receiving tho indentations mndo by tho pin tho lead pa per can bo taken off tho cylinder nnd by re placing it nt any otuer lime tne worus tan ne exactly reproduced. Several days ago Mr. Edison ndjusted tho phonograph to the tele phono nud succeeded perfectly in sending n conversation over the telegrntih wire from his laboratory at Menlo Park to Newark, a dis tance of seven miles.
