Thero are something like fifty or inoro species inhabiting the United htatcs, all Infesting vegetation in both their larval and perfect state. The eggs aro deposited either on the stems of small plants near tho roots, or directly In tbo ground, where they batch, and tho young grubs bur row into the soil, feeding upon tho roots of various kinds of cultivated and wild plants. The species most common in tbo Eastern Slates are the large brown May beetle (Iaui nmlernn fitted) ami tlio Btnall hairy (L.trittu.) The first, however, is the most destructive. It remains in the larval or grub state threo years, feeding tho whilo on tho roots of plauts ; and during this time it is capable of doing considerable damage to crops, and es pecially to meadows and lawns. The lnrvn), when fully grown, are about an inch in diam eter, with a smooth brownibhbead, and 6troug mandibles or jaws. They aro generally known among farmers and gardeners under the name of "white grubs." In certain localities and bcasons these grubs become so abundant in meadows as to entirely destroy tho grass by eating off its roots, and tho cutiro dead turf ran bo readily rolled up liko a blanket, bav lug been cut looso from tho lower roots by these pests. We hear that many of the mead ows and lawns in tho suburbs of Boston and Cambridge are being destroyed this season by whito grubs s and nurserymen report severo losses from tho destruction of seedling trees, tho roots of which havo been oaten by tho grubs. Wo havo frequently warned our leaders against planting strawberry and other Biuall fruits upon land which bad recently been mod as a mcadow, forif it contains any consid erable number of whito grubs, the ploughing under of the sod will not kill tlicm j but their natural supply of food being cut off in de ttroyiug the grass roots, they will quickly at tack thoso of other plauts set out in tho sanio soil. White grubs aro especially fond of the roots of btrawberrics, and many thousands of these plants aro destroyed annually by them. Tho best way to avoid losses of this kind is to use only Land which has been in cultivation for two or three years previous, and from which the grubs have escaped by being trans formed into beetles. Of course,an old mead ow or pasture when broken up and tbo sod well rotted, is usually in first rato condition for a nursery or the reception of strawberry and other small plants ; and we would much prefer such land for the purposes named than that which bad been constantly under tho plough, provided it was not infested with whito grubs or other insects. As tho May beetles do not seek cultivated lidds in which to lay their eggs, tho farmer can always avoid losses by them when setting out strawberries nud other plants bv selecting a field that has been two or three years under tho plough, or long enough to havo permitted all tho whito grubs to change luto beetles. A close observ er can always tell whether lain mcauows nro infested by May beetles by the dead clumps or patches of grass, and when ho sees these indications it is well to break up and cultivate the land for n year or two in com. or sow in grain before seeding down again. Many n farmer has seen Ins strawberry plants, seen ling forest trees, beans and other si Hilar plants wither ana tlio without knowing tuo cause : but had ho duR down to tho roots a fat whito grub might have been found near by. Tho greater part of our noxious insects aro only injurious to vegetation in ouo of their sUines, either as larva or imago : out tuo amy beetles feed as grubs on tho roots, and when they become beetles attack tho leaves of trees and other plants. They sometimes appear iu countless numbers, attacking and stripping the leaves from fruit and forest trees. This is mainlv done at night, as they are nocturnal iu their liabits, remaining ipiict during the lav but becoming very active alter darK ; con sequent!' it escapes many of what otherwise would bo ITS KATUBAI. ENEMIES. Among these aro tho crow, blackbird, and Kevcral other of our larger wild birds, as well as domestic fowls which cat the May beetle with evident relish. Hut with all tueso help era the farmer and "gardener frequently find the beetles and their grubs far too numerous, and aro compelled, or at least should endeav. or to lessen their numbers by artificial means, If all the residents of a town or neighborhood would unite in tuskinc war upon these pests, losses from their depredations could be very materially lessened, if not entirely avoided. MIT BEETLE THAI'S. Although this insect naturally prefers dark. cess to licht for its work, it is attracted by artificial light ; and n fire or lamp at night during the early part of summer, if placed in the open air or iu n room with open windows or doors, is certain to bo visited by a greater or less number of Jlay beetles. Inking ait. vantage of this fondness for a light, it is quite an easy matter to make traps lor c.itcu hie large numbers of tho beetles. Au excel lent trap can be made by sawing a barrel or cask through tho middle, niling tu.1 two halves nearly full of water, and placing them in tbo open air near some building where they will be protected from draught 01 air only ono of tbo tubs need be used unless more aro wanted. Make a float a foot square, of some light dry wood, or put n standard ot wood in tuo centre ot tue tuu, and set a lamp upon it at night, and tho troi is ready for use. Tho beetles being attracted to tho light, btrike the Lamp and fall into tho water. To prevent any from crawling out up th sides of the tub, it is only ueceiwiry tb pour a little oil into tho water; this will spread thinly over tho surface, and each bee tle falling in will become coated with it, nud tho breathing pores, which are situated on tli body, instead of tho head, as in hiclnr aul mals. will bo closed. Another good trap can be made by coating the inside of a barrel or largo cask with tar, and placing a lighted lamp inside of it. These traps nro incxpeii stve. easily constructed, and if placed abon! tiio gnrd-'n aud orchard during the season in which May beetles nliounil. would Help to keep this pest in check. Benzine fob Moths. A set of furniture that seemed to be alite with the larva-, from the mouth it came new. aud from which nun dred-i of these, pests had been picked, aud brushed, was set into a room by itself. Three gallons of benzine were purchased, at ;;().. gallon, retail. Using a small watering pot, with a lino roso sprinkler, tho whole uphol stcry was saturated through aud through with tho benzine, livery moth larvai, and egg, wa: killed. The benzino dried out in n few hours, and its entire odor disappeared i threo or four days. Not tho slightest harm happened to tho aruish, or wood, or launcs, or hair stuffing. That was months ago. ami not a sign of u moth has sinco appeared. The carpets were also well-sprinkled nil lound th sides of the rooms with equally good effect, To havo known this two years ago would hav been worth at least ,u, in tho saving to biugle set of furniture, and would have baved many days of most auitoying labor. For furs. flannels, indeed all woolen articles containing mollis, benzino is most valuable, l'ut them iu a box, sprinkle them with benzine, close the box tightly, aud iu day or two tho pests will be exterminated, aud the benzine will all evaporate on opening. If signs don't fail, tho coming winter will bo the coldest experienced in this latitude since the discover' of the country by a man named Columbus. The squirrels are laying iu their winter coal, the beavers are putting heaters In the basement of their lodges, the bees have killed off all the drones and lined their hives with sheet iron, the muskrats are flying south, wild ducks aro committing sul. ride, tho goose bono is black sixteen inches Jeep, poor families aro buying an extra dog, and we have had a new collar put on oar CrrHrt unit CriMel Multisets Crewel work, the occupation and amuse ment of our grcut-graiiilmothcrs, has lately becti roWtcd, nud again brought into fashion through the teachings of an Ilnglisii art school, It is unite often, though very inappropriately. called "South Keiisiiiglou Nut die Work." That name signllies nothing, ns tho South Kensington School baches all kinds of em broidery 1 still, to that school Is due tho cred it of the revival of crew, i work as an art. Crewels nro n mecies of tarn, not unlike. carpet thrums, woven loosely of soft wool. nud colored in tho best and softi si dyes. Our market is now flooded with a very poor imi tation of tho Iluglish crewels of both Otrmaii and homo manufacture, but even the most skilled embroiderers cannot accomplish really good work Willi such material. There semis 110 possible leasou why some of our largo woolen manufacturers should Hot tr to sup. ily tho demand lor n really good article, Ill lead of obliging embroiderers to import woolens from Englaii 1, at b. avy cost of freight and duties. All kinds of material aro suitable to trowel work; silk, satin and vi Ivtt must always be worked in frames. Chair backs, anil-ma- cassars, tea-tray napkins, table borders nnd corners, bureau and chair cov-rs, and similar articles are both useful aud suitaMc subjects to bo worked on courso gray linen or lino crash. The design must always be drawn nil the material itself, which is ono surety that this work can never become very common. Tho needlewoman who is enough of an artist to draw has a great advantage over others, as she will havo original designs for her em broidery. Flowers should always bo more or less conventionalized, and but little shading is used; a fiat effect is considered desirable in this work. A little silk of tho samp shade, or nearly so. as the crewels, can often be introduced with very good results, and most of tho filoselles of tho best quality will bear washing. in starling a piece 01 crewel embroidery, begin at tho lower part of a flower or leaf, hold tho work firmly between the fingers, and work with a fine darning-needle. The ncedlo must point towards the worker, but she, al ways works from herself. Xhohrst stitch is nit in, as for back stitch, but tho needle is irought out to the left of the stitch, and n lit- tlo below its upper end : the thread must al ways be to tho right of the stitches, nnd the needle always to tho left i the leaf is worked iu this way to tho top, then me material is to bo turned round and the pattern worked down in tho same way. Great care must be taken that tho material does not show through. Extra stitches may always be added after wards. Au inexperienced woikwoman will try to glvo her stitches n regular and well-defined look. This is quito wrong, because in good crewel work the stitches all blend to gether with moss-like effect, Veiuing is dono after a leaf is quito finished, In the same stitch, with a lighter crowel than tho one in which tho leof is worked. Stems aro worked in the sama way, with n shorter and more even stitch, which has tho effect of cord. Tlio outline of a design should scarcely ever bo worked first, but should grow up from tho gradual filling in of the design. The actual crewel-work stitch is very quickly learnt, auel would perhaps lead a pupil to bupposo that crewel-work was very tjisy to accomplish ; bat tho Mitch is a small part of tho work, anil only by care, pat once and practice can really excellent crewel embroidery be accomplished. Tbo worker has no model for coloring or shading, and must trust to her own eye, not always a reliable guide, but experience and practice win smooth away an niincuiues. ine design must bo clearly drawn on the material without blot or slur, and the veimngs lightly traced, it may be first drawn with n nam pencil, nnd then traced over with n very tine camel's hair brush and India ink. Great care should bo taken with the wrong side, as artl cles in crewel work am not lined, and there need never be either knots or short ends to be seen on tho reverse side. When tho wotk is finished, it should bo placed face down up. on a thick flannel, a damp cloth put on tho wrong side and a dry ona on that, nud then very heavily pressed with a large iron. Crewel work can always be washed in blood.wanu, strained bran water no soap to bo used and ironed before dry on flannel. Society of lhmraute -irt. Arclile ntul PoLoiilnjr. When poison has accidentally been taken. medical aid should bo instantly sought. As minutes may bo of value, however, prompt measures may be adopted in those which must interveno until it arrives, and the fol lowing are recommended ; Iu poisoniug from Laudanum, opium, henbane, paregoric, south ing syrup, syrup of poppies, bad hsli, poison ous mushrooms, poisonous seeds or plants, or indeed almost nuy vegetable substance, tho first thing to be done is to empty the stomach with an emetic. This may be made by mix ing a tablespoonful of mustard or salt with a cupful of warm water, and repeat the dose un- til there is free vomiting, in au narcotic poison the person should on no account bo allowed to go to sleep, or he may never wake. For all strong acids, such as oil of vitriol, muriatic, nitric and oxalic acid'', put au ounce of cal cined magnesia into a pint of water, and tako a wineglassf id every two minutes. If this is not attainable, dissolve half au ounco of soap in n pint of water, aud give a wineglassful every four minutes. Magnesia or chalk may be taken if lucifer matches are swallowed. For arsenic, which is found in rat and ver min poisons and ague drops, empty tho stom ach by an emetic of ten grains of sulphate of ziuc, if it can be had ; if not, mustard and warm water. Give large quantities of milk nud raw eggs, or failiug these, flour aud wa ter both before nud after the vomiting. For mercury iu all its forms corrosive sublimate, vermilion, red precipitate, calomel the whites of lwele eggs should be beaten up in two pints of water, and a wiueglassful given every three minutes. If the patient vomits. all the better. If the eggs cannot immediate ly bo obtained, uso flour and water or milk. For prussic acid, which is often found in al mond flavor, sal volatile and water and stimu Lints may be given. Hall far Block In IVIntrr. As tbo season has now arrived for confin ing stock, nnd they nro prevented from tak ing the amount of exercise they obtain iu tho milder portions of the year when they are at pasture, iu order to maintain their good hcullh greater nttention is necessary to tho requirements of tho nniuials. Ono of the most important of these is n frequent supply of bait. Mankind, as a rule, does not par take of n single meal without having it liber ally seasoned witli this important natural product. Tho craving of animals is of a sim ilar nature. The hunter knows that the wa ry deer can be surely allured to destruction by tho magnetic-like influence of the salt lick, and there quietly awaits the arrival of his victims. Domestic animals have the same longing for bait, which can only bo satisfied by frequent nud liberal allowances. Wc nro told by African travelers that children iu that distant laud aro often seen sucking lumps of rock salt and enjoy lhcui ns much as children hero do the "mintstick." The horse, partic ularly, relishes this nutritious seasoning ; and to tho hog it can be given m increased quan titles with bene ficial results. Tho sheep be. ing a smaller feeder requires a less quantity than swine. Salt in its pure stato is fatal to poultry, but when mixed to a small extent with tiieir food has nn exct llent effect. - - Her- mtinP'icii Ttlrgraph, IC-riilus? Apples. A correspondent asks us how bo can keep his winter apples until lato in spring, say to the end of May. There is but ouo answer to make : First, the apples must bp good ktvp. ers, free from bruise or blemish. Second, they must be spread out on shelves or packtd iu barrels; and kept iu an atiuospbire of trom 4ii to aj degrees, better Ironi lu to 4.i that is, at a temperature as equable as possi. ble. Some cellars are just the thing and pre serve them beautifully. Others nro too moist. Where this is the ease, a few bushels of stone lime should be used. Sliding shelves, six inches apart, latticed bottom, with a single layer or fruit, aro extremely convenient. they allow of coustaut examination without disturbing the fruit. A friend informed us some years ago that with a largo stand of these shelves iu his cellar, with a few inches of lime on tho bottom of the cellar, ho kept ins apples into May in peri.ect condition aud good flavor. uemianuiitn jtugrapii.
