Mr. I,e Maistie was six feet two inches in height and in his prime weighed 2'J."i pounds. He had a very retentive memory and his reminiscences of stirring events of history were very interesting, particularly those concerning Napoleon, Josephine and contemporary French history. Howard, submitted to the probate court at Builingtou last week, bequeathes, in trust, the sum of .MM) as a permanent fund, to be called the Howard Educational Prize fund, of which the net annual income shall lie devoted to the purpose of and shall be paid out as prizes, to be called "Howard Prizes," for scholarships, attain ments, good standing and deportment on the part of the students in the University of Vermont and state agricultural college, and in the public High school in the city of Burlington. A bequest of !?'.'000 is al so made to the university, the income of which shall be used for the library. To this are added four large oil paintings. Two thousand dollars are bequeathed to the diocese of Vermont, the income from which is to be used for the poor of the par ish of St. Paul's in Burlington. The dairy school at the University of Vermont will open the ith and continue six weeks. A meeting of tho state societies of Sons of Temperance was held at Vergennes Wednesday. C. R. Durkee, a prominent real estate owner and hardware merchant of Barre, was kicked by a horse Sunday. His jaw bone was broken, collar bone smashed and one side of ids face cut open. He will probably recover. Joseph Rldeau, an aged Frenchman of Woodford, has mysteriously disappeared. Ho went to Bennington and bought a horse and two days after the animal was found a mile south of that place in the road, but there was no trace of Itidcau. One of the largest auction sales over held in tho state has been in progress at West Fairlee during the past few days. The boiler in Joseph Battell's Milestone iUarry In Weybridge, two miles from Mld illebury, exploded Monday, killing Patrick Desmond, the foreman of the iiiarry, and seriously injuring James Henderson, whose arm was broken and body badly bruised and burned, and Albert Davis, whose eyes weie badly hurt. Desmond's body was torn to pieces, the head and a part nf the trunk being carried TO rods by a piece of Hie boiler. Desmond leave a wife and two small children, who lie at Barre. The engine liouse was blown to atoi'fis. The powder house, containing powder and dynamite, was tipjied over by the eoneus- slim, but fortunately did not explode, i Desmond was at work about the boiler, I Henderson was just entering the house, and Davis was a short distance away.
