Tea plantations in Ceylon have been in existence only 30 years, yet the annual exports of black tea amount lo nearly $20,000,000 in value. Formerly coffee consti tuted Ceylon’s main industry, but after a disease of the plant in 1880 its cultivation was discon tinued. Many planters, however, recouped themselves by lea and j'ubber. Thanks chiefly to the former article, the island’s' old prosperity revived. Today Ceylon boasts 1,500 plantations. Plant necessary to tea cultiva tion is costly but very labor-sav ing. The work itself is not hard; only the climate makes it irk some. What is wanted mainly of employes is to watch machinery and feed it from the stock of tea leaves awaiting treatment. The SvorkCrs are not Singhalese, hut halives of southern India. A la borer’s wages vary from eight to 16 cents a day, while a foreman’s salary averages $200 a month. Birds and Cyclones. It lias been suggested that birds habitually make use of storms in traveling from one part of their range to another. It is pointed out that if a bird cannot find shelter it must be more comfor table on the wing than on the ground during a storm, because in the fiercest gale it (lies in a moving medium, like a swimmer in a strongly flowing river. It is worth while taking a chance on the $800 diamond ring being raffled at Plant & Com pany's, jewelers. NOTICE OF FORFEITURE. To Chris Tjosevig. E. P. Casn man, Oscay Olson, N. P.
