Natural graphite is the product of different geologic agencies, mostly related to the heat of the molten magma which, ' during periods of convulsion, has pen etrated the overlying rock strata from (he earth’s interior. It has two forms—crystalline, or, as it is known to the trade, “flake’* graphite’, which occurs as small flakes disseminated through crystalline schists, and amor phous graphite, which has no grain or structure. Coal beds in some places have been turned into grairhile by I he confined heal of intruded molten rock, and this natural phenomenon may have suggested the feasibility of man ufacturin'-'' artificial amorphous graphite, an industry which of late years has heroine of consid erable importance in the United Stales. Importations of graph ite, however, largely exceed do mestic production, the figures for 1912, according to the United Stales Geological Survey, being for the imports 25,613 short tons, valued at 81,709,337, an.I for the domestic output 2,445 Ions of natural graphite, valued at $207,033, and 6,4 48 tons of man fact ui'ed graphite, valued at $830,193. The island of Ceylon is the greatest contributor to American imports of graphite. Graphite is a mineral of great and increasing induist^ial| 'im portance and lias many uses, though the graphite from any one source or mine is not adapt ed to all these uses. One of the oldest and most important appli cations of graphite is in the manufacture' of crucibles for use in the steel, brass ami bronze, and other imluslries. Such cru cibles must have good tensile slrenglh and for |heir manufac ture a fibrous or (laky graphite is used, IJio interlocking of ttie fill ers adding to the strength. Ground Ceylon lump graphite is the material most in favor in the United Stales for making cru cibles, although small amounts of American Hake graphite are al so used. Amorphous graphite has never been successfully util ized in crucible manufacture, ex cept. for very small crucibles. The United States Geological Survey has just published, as an advance chapter from Mineral Kesoure s for I!)12, a report on I he graphite industry in the Un ited Slates by Fdson S. Hast in. which also includes ligures of imporlalions into Ibis country as well as statistics covering other graphite-producing countries.
