RUSSIAN CREW • NEAR DEATH Boat Lies Nine Hours on Bottom of Sea—Raised and All Are Saved. i A recent dispatch from SI. Petersburg relates the following terrible experience of the crew of ja Russian submarine: Owing to. the official imiuiry, 111” full details of the terrible ex perience of the commander and crew of nineteen of the submarine JUinoga are now available. The boat, under the command of Lieut. Garsoov, was manoeuvering off Libau, when she was seen to take a sudden plunge. The appear ance of the emergency*buoy first gave the alarm. Then for nine hours nothing was known. The accident happened at 3 in I tie afternoon, but owing, it would seem, to the'dispersal of the men on a Saturday the message was not acted on for several hours, and if was not until t) at night that the salvage vessels reached the spot. The weather conditions remained happily favorable, and divers having lixed I he lifting chains, the Miiinga was success fully brought to the surface by midnight, having been nine hours at the bottom of the sea. I When the after hatch was op ened llirel! men staggered out, barely able to crawl. Killeen of the crew and the captain were got out unconscious from Ihe after part of Ihe vessel. There remain-' ed only the coxswain, who was in Ihe conning tower amidships It was necessary to raise the sub marine well ou| of I be water to gel at the conning tower, and this took another three hours 'work, but the coxswain, when releas ed after I'-’ hours’ confinement, was in Ihe best condition of any of Ihe crew. Thus Ihe whole command of -0 men was saved and the submarine recovered af ter lying nine hours at Ihe bot tom of Ihe sea helpless. The cause of Ihu accident has been ascertained to have been a defective ventilator. Hcfore cx jercising, these ventilators, which! are indispensable to the proper ‘action of the accumulators which 'provide the inotiv* 'energy of sub marines, are screwed home from jibe inside. A ventilator in the [forward part of the vessel was leilher defective or had no| been [properly screwed home. The lill Irr 111 in'll‘ happen owing to Ihe presence of some foreign body, a '(•leaning rag, for instance, which !would suffice to prevent a proper ! watertight closing of Ihe veil II jlalor. while leaving the man who had charge of it under Ihe im I pression that lie had duly screw j ed it home. > Whatever the mipiiry may shew ifn have been I tie immediate cause iof the defect, it is known that the !accident happened by water leak ing in through this forward ven ' tilat.or until the delicate trim of I the submarine was affected and ! she plunged head foremost to the j bottom. Water ebntinued to ro ller until the air within the vessel jwas so far compressed as to re sist the entrance of any more at a I pressure of seven fathoms’ depth. ! On this air the crew of 20 sur vived, the captain and. fifteen of the men in the body of the ves sel suffering also from the fumes j of chlorine gas given off' by the i accumulators. The three men j who crawled out unaided by the afterhatch, and the coxswain, who I after being confined in the coll iding tower three hours longer than any of his mates was yet ■the least affected, were apparent ! ly out of reach of the chlorine !gas fumes, and the latter, in ad^ idilion, appears to have had more land better air to breathe. All have now receovered from the ef fects of their terrible experience. | Talk about your bargains at j Adler’s. j Mouse dance npxt Saturday ev Icuing in Moose hall. Something ! new promised.
