In Texas a federal judge sent four reporters to jail for an hour because they refused to tell where they had procured certain infor mation. Refusal to divulge the source of the inf rmation published was based on the honor of each re porter’s word. Any honorable reporter, given information in confidence, would go to jail before he would violate his promise not to tell where h'e got the information. The sources of information of great usefulness to the public would soon be closed to the re porter who failed to keep faith. Of course, some reporters are too weak to guard these confi dences. A judge might frighten them inlo a betrayal of the trust. But, be it said to the credit of reporters as a class, most of them will go smilingly to jail before they will reveal what they have promised not to reveal. No good purpose is to be ser ved by the judicial practice of trying to compel reporters to disclose the sources of confiden tial information. Judges who try to compel re porters to betray the trust im posed in them are antagonistic alike to the American press and the American public. In tin* nature of things much of the useful and necessary Infor mation gathered hy reporters must come from confidential sources. Few of tin* larger abuses in the public service wnuM come to light except through strictly confidential sources. The information is not to he held in confidence; il is, upon verification, to he published. But the name of the furnisher of the information, in the first instance, where confidence is exacted, is to be withheld, and no honorable re porter would break his pledge thus given. Judges who send reporters to jail because they refuse to be tray confidences imposed m them will hurt the bench more than they hurt tin* press.—Seatlie Sun. The world do move.
