gram when Mr. Harris will show
the slides of the Dayton flood,
which were shown at the smoker
the other night. Mr. Harris is a
former resident of Dayton and is
familiar with all points of in
terest and handles the subject in
an interesting ijud instructive
manner.

Quince Fish, ondl of the best
known prospectors of the (dis
trict, lias relumed I'rifln Portage
bay and reports that he and his
partners have made an important
find there. The others who are
interested with him are Phil Col
lins and (leorge Berry.
Mr. Fish is elated over the find
and believes it will prove to be
one of the biggest mines in Alas
ka when opened up. He says the
ledge is from four to six feet wide
and shows on the surface for
more than four thousand feet.
Samples which he has had as
sayed gave return's running from
$1!) to $77. These were from
the surface, and samples taken
from the hundreds of tons of
'quart/ which had been mined by
the elements and glaciers in past
ages, all show a liberal amount of
gold when panned.
The prospect was recently vis
ited by a representative .of tin*
geological department, wlm is
now making an inspection of the
Port Wells district, and lie as
sured Mr. Fish that lie undould
idlv had made a liinl of merit and
one which would prove to lie a
mine second to none in Alaska if
surface indications could lie re
lied upon.
Mr. Fish is an experienced
miner and for years was con
nected with the Treadwell mine
at Juneau, and should know the
value of a prospect. He is satis
lied lie has struck something
which will bring him the for
tune for which he has lieetn look
ing. The claims are on the right
side of Portage hay going in and
'about live miles from the head
of the bay.
