Jg SOUTH DAKOTA CORN

Sioux Fails Press: The department of
agriculture's estimate of the condition
of the corn crop on August 1 places
South Dakota in the lead with tfee best
average. South Dakota's corn crop
this year shows an average of 86. Not
only is this abetter average than shown
by any other corn producing state, but
it is far ahead of the average for
the country for the past ten years.
Taking ten years in the corn belt and
the average per cent of a perfect score
on August 1, was 32.1, South Dakota
corn js almost four points ahead of this
ten year average.
South Dakota corn this year is two
points ahead of the corn in any other
state. Illinois comes next with 84,
Minnesota 82 and Iowa 80. These
three famous corn producing states
cannot show anything this year to com
pare with South Dakota corn. It was
noe so many years ago that it was be
lieved by many that South Dakota
would never become a great corn pro
ducing state. Later it was conceded
that the southern portion of the state
could produce corn equal in yield and
quality to that produced anywhere in
the world. Every year the corn belt in
this state has been widening arid ex
tending farther north. The total acre
Age has increased at a rapid rate, and
corn is fast becoming the largest single
crop produced here.
This splendid corn average as shown
by the government report follows close
ly cm numerous rumors that dry weath
er had materially injured the crops of
the state. Threshing yields have al
ready shown this to be a 'great mistake
as far as small grain is concerned, and
the government report now proves that
corn, instead of being injured by dry
weather, is in better condition than in
any Btate in the union. Surely South
Dakotans have reason to fell proud and
thankful for the wonderful showing in
all agricultural products, made year
after year in this state.. It appears to
be practicable to have such a thing as
a crop failure in South Dakota. .,,
