Tho Detroit Free Tress of Wednes day morning, Juno 12, has the follow in! to say about a 10-year-old Avoca girl who tried to commit suicide: "Shortly before 0 o'clock last night an officer saw a young girl staggering on Woodward avenue, near (Jrand Circus Park. lie took her to a drug store, where it was found bhe had taken about a drachm of laudanum out of a bottle which held nearly an ounce. A call was sent for tho Emergency hospi tal ambulance and the girl was taken to that institution. She gavo her name as Maud ltrooks, aged Hi, and said that her parents lived in Avoca, a small flaco about 17 miles northwest of Tort luron. Tho girl came to this city to look for work and secured a room at Congress street west. She was unable to find anything to do and as her sup ply of money gave out she bought noison with her few remaining pennies, hate last night flic had recovered somewhat and her condition is not dangerous. It is probable that tho girl will be sent home." The Orchid Fad. The quaint, brilliant, and almost un canny orchid is the Hower of tho hour for weddings and other notable func tions, and is achieving tho popularity which its enthusiastic admirers haye long predicted for it. Everything about orchids is fascinating, and much curious and interesting information is given in a charming paper in the June number of Demorest's Magazine. "Some White House Orchids:'' and it is beau tifully illustrated by over a score of reproductions from photographs taken, by special permission ot Mrs. ( love land, in the White House conserva lories, which depict some of the gems of the noted collection. Another in teresting and handsomely illustrated article is "The Indians of the Empire State;" and some ot the peculiarities of that curiosity of tho annual king dom the burro are exploited in an article entitled "How a liurro discov ered Creede," which is embellished with a number of portraits of the peculiar little beast. "Should Inter national Marriages be Denounced'.'" is the interesting question discussed in a symposium of' society women, law yers, clergymen, and authors, and some very unique opinions are given. The story matter is bright and sug gestive: in Sanitarian, a splendid art i- e is " 1 he I. ones and .Muscles: J heir delation to Symmetry and Deformity," winch some hclptul hints about preserving symmetry are given; House hold has a paper on marketing, with lliistrations of the dillerent cuts of icef; and all the other departments are, as usual, replete; with interesting and helpful matter.
