The new mill company has purchas ed the Hoskin property near the depot for $1,200, which they will use for a Bite for their new mill. They will also ubo the lot immediately back of this which is now owned by John Holden, ono of tho incorporators. The large price paid for this property by the company indicates that they don't in tend to let trifles interfere with their having the bent there is going. AMONG THE CHURCHES. Things That Interest Church Goers. Rev. Desiardins will continue meet ings in lirockway during next week. YI'SCE of Disciple church will here after meet at 2:00 p. m. instead of 2:30. Services of the Presbyterian church next Sabbath will be in the evening at 7 o'clock. Miss Violet Trask will conduct the Young People's meeting in M. E. church next Sunday evening. An appropriate programme will be rendered and oll'erings will be received toward providing a Thanksgiving din ner for needy families. Any ono hav ing anything to give for this worthy object is requested to leave word with Miss Fannie Mathews, chairman of the mercy and help committee, or at M. E. church Tuesday evening next. The entertainment to be given by the Junior Aid Society of the M. P. church on Thanksgiving night, will bo sure to please the public. The pro gram consists of music, recitations, solos, etc. The admittance fee has been placed so low that everybody may attend. Since the proceeds are to be applied on the pastor's salary, the patronage of the church people is expected. At the close of the enter tainment several interesting tableaux will be given. MoVeagh, Jr., of Detroit, the eloquent young orator who spoke hero in the campaign of 1883 and whom many people will remember, will be in Yale on Monday evening, Dec. 2nd. Tom's progress since that year has been remarkable and brilliant. In the campaign of 1892 he made a tour of Ohio with McKinley, and in 1894 under the auspices of the Republican Nation al Committee, he spoke in Yirginia, Kentucky, Maine and New York, con cluding the campaign in New York in company with Joseph 17. Choate and Chaunccy M. Depew He has just re turned from a tour of Europe and his talk on "A tour through England, Ireland and Scotland" will no doubt be vivid and eloquent. His talk is illustrated by more than 100 beautiful ly colored views, thrown oirDOO square feet of canvas by a $600 specially con structed McAllister stcreopticon. If eloquence, education, and art can con tribute to an entertaining evening, then tho evening of Dec. 2nd will be a very pleasant one. NEWS OF A WEEK. A Budget of Happenings In and Around'St. Clair County. Scarlet fever seems to be spreading in Marine City. D. L. Rallentine is now proprietor of the Port Huron Saturday Press. There is talk of changing the name of the town of Deckeryille to Ueloit. St. Clair county's share of the pri mary school money amounts to fl5,047.07. The Detroit street car company sold 100 horses in Port Huron last week for one dollar a head. Editor Sutton, of the Marine City Reporter, has gone to Atlanta, Ga., to attend the exposition. Evangelist Clias. RIack,of Deanville, has finished a series of meetings at Ilighbanks, Macomb county. A firo at George Yokum's electrical works in Port Huron destroyed consid erable property Sunday night. George Yrooman, of Port Huron, committed suicide at the Stringer House last week by taking a dose of laudanum. Alfred Kinney shot George Letts at Port Sanilac last week in a drunken row. Retts died and Kinney gavo himself up. It is said that William Tierney, a resident of Emmet, is insane and roam ing at large. The people want him taken caro of. On the Lester farm near Capac over 7,000 bushels of grain were raised this year, including oats, peas, spring wheat and buckwheat. The cornerstone of the new building of the Young Men s C hristian Associa tion will be laid on Thanksgiving Day with appropriate exercises. Gilbert Hathaway, of New Raltiniore, suddenly left that village recently, and he is now charged with forging notes amour ting to !SJ,000. John Cannis, a pioneer and well-to do farmer living near Capac, died last week of heart failure, superinduced by lnllammatory rheumatism. Thieves stole 27 bushels of potatoes from Mrs. Jane Jackson, of Croswell. It would seem as though most any one could buy their potatoes this year. A new railroad is being constructed through Arenac county, beginning at Emery Junction and extending south to Pay City, to be known asthc D. & M. Twenty of the Port Huron customs officials nave had their salaries raised and now receive $231 a year more salary than they have been receiving. A scheme now being talked of in Sanilac county is that of each farmer putting his name on his barn, so that every one who passes may know who lives there. John Thompson, one of Port Hu ron's first policemen, died last week of fiaralysis. Mr. Thompson had suffered rom softening of the brain for a num ber of years. Rirdie Mabel Kimball, of Riley town ship, deserted her nine-months-old baby in Port Huron laet week, leaving it upon the doorstep of William Gar rison's residence. Port Huron's truant officer finds children in that city who can not go to school on account of not having neces sary clothing. Charitable people will look after the cases. Luther II. Iieecher, of Detroit, grandson of the lato Luther Reecher, was run over by the Detroit train on the Michigan Central four miles south of Lapeer on November 15. Horace Perkins, of New Baltimore, aged 23 years, shot himself m tho breast last week and at last reports ho was not expected to live. The shooting is eaid to nave been accidental.. Wm. Cruise, a German of Clyde, has been locked up for the past month on a charge of being insane. Somo friends claim that he is not insane and will have him re-examined. Daniel Webster, of St. Clair, has be gun suit in the circuit court against Constance Terney for ? 1,000 damages, claiming that Terney has a iargo amount of farming utensils which he wont give up to iiim (Webster.) G. W. Wilkinson, of Sanilac town ship, left last week with his family witii two covered wagons and teams, expecting to reach his destination in the southern part of Georgia in about 30 days, where he will settle with a new colony. Governor Rich has pardoned John Diem, of Port Huron, who was senten ced in 1802 for five years and six months for killing Captain David Ge naw. his adopted father.
