"When the treaty of peace was signed between this nation and Spain, and Torto ltico became our island, did that make the Porto Iticans citizens of the United States? If they are citizens, then give them the same rights, oppor tunities, and privileges according to citizens in any other territory. If they are not citizens, then we have made a most stupid blunder, in not forchij? Spain to remove her citizens as well as her soldiers from the island. Coxoijess may pass the finance bill, adopt the gold standard and thus make honest money. Hut why not, while they are at the business, so fix it that these honest dollars would have to be honestly earned? We may be a mite oldfotrvish. but it is our firm convic tion that dishonest dollars do not trouble the country one millionth part as much as dishonest ways of getting them. Ry all means give us the honest dollar, but bear in mind these will need honest pockets in which to store them selves. It seems that our Congressman Weeks has been to Torto Rico once up on a time, and while there did not spend his whole time in soaking his feet. On the other hand, he busied himself in picking up pointed pebbles and filling his pockets. These he brought home for specimens and am munition. A few days ago he fired a few of them into the pending Home Rule Hill, knocking the spots off the same. He intimated that he stands ready to do more shooting with balls out of those same pockets. The fellows on the other side of the fence will have to bo deft dodgers or some of these pebbles may strike them and there be some skinned noses or bunged eyes. At the time Uncle Sam picked up little Porto Rico, we heard something about the sugar producing power of that island, and what an acquisition it was to our great sugar-using country. It seemed that it was all even so, yes, too much so, for the sugar growers of this country. The result is, that these beet sugar men want a tarifi laid against the Porto Rico product. Ninety-nine sugar eaters of this country want cheap sugar just as much as one sugar grower wants dear sugar. Not considering the rights of our newly made citizens in Porto Rico, we ask, which will be the greatest good to the greatest number; cheap sugar for the ninety-nine, or dear sugar for the one? Poiito Rico is an island all surround ed by water and therefore ought to pay a duty on imports into this country Manhattan Island is also entirely sur rounded by water, and therefore, hold on there! you numskull! Don't you know the cases are not paralel? Man hattan Island is not a territory, but a part of a sovereign state. Well, then, suppose we try our logic on Alaska? That is a territory, and no mortal has ever yet claimed its people fit for state hood or self government. Hut who has heard of Alaska paying duty on its fur or fish when selling them at United States ports? Why not put the Porto Itic&ns on an equal footing as citizens .of this country with Alaskan redskins? BLOOD TELLS. If any body ever doubted that blood was thicker than water the Hoer-Hritish war ought to clear his mind on that point. Pry open any man's heart, take a peep at his real sentiments and sym pathies, you are almost certain to find Dutch blood will favor the Hoers, and English blood the Rritish. These may be called race prejudices. He that as it may, the fact remains that Dutchmen well nigh universally are hoping that Oom Paul will win, and that those of English blood want the Red Coats to be victorious. THE GOOD ROAD QUES TION. The agitation in favor of improved roads may have been started by wheel men; and if so, then this is only anoth er proof of what a blessing bikes are. Hut others are now interested and the question is not likely to be shelved very soon. It is a question of vital import ance to all classes. The merchant as well as the farmer wants improved roads. The man who buys farm pro duce as well as the man who sells, is concerned in the question. We do not know any better way to promote the good cause than agitation except one. That one is with object lessons. Let pieces of road, or some line selected for the purpose of example, be made as it should, and the earnest advocates of the cause will be multiplied a hundred fold. Why could such an object lesson not be given on some road leading into Yale? School Report. Report of school in District No. 5, Greenwood, for the month ending Feb ruary 9. 1000.
