o o o o IT OUR P URF To again announce the arrival of SPRING GOODS and quote our prices. NEW P JL. utney & Chamberlain, T HE XPOSITOR. J - J J. A. MENZIES, Publisher. Published every Friday at Yale. Terms: $l.l)o per year In advance. Entered at the postofllce at Yale as second classinailiuatter. Friday, Mauch 23, 1900. Tin: (!.(). 1. has only to do one thing in dead earnest do that one thing so hard that the people will believe and know that it meant to light to the finish and it would have the country solid for a score of years. Let its leaders, its men of conscience and con victions, act out those convictions in anti monopoly, anti-trust laws, and en force them and the people will be with tliL..i .a over-whelming majorities. The cry about expansion, and imperialism are mere nothings, and would not be heard at all, if the guns of government were set playing on the real enemy of our republic and its liberty. The real issue would then swallow up the arti licial ones as ilames devour the dry twigs in a forest. It seems they are getting at the root of the matter in Cuba, and though it may t:ke time, the inevitable wind up will Le Cuba a part of the union. The commissioner appointed by Uncle Sam to look alter the schools and school houses in Cuba, has organized them by hundreds. Already 100,000 children are gathered in them. The ofiicer re ports that ere the year closes there will be 150,000 children of that island in school, modeled after the plan of our own. That's the stuff! and it will make yankees every time. Tn k long lost General Will White has been heard from at last. It seems that ho slid to Chicago; thence to New Or leans, where, like Jonah, he found a ship and sailed to South Africa, landing at Cape Town. The letter he writes in dicates regret for his hasty departure and delinquent farewells, and that he now wishes he had stayed at home and faced the music. Ilunning away from justice is a dillkult thing to do success fully. A man's life like his shadow is sure to go with him. Tiihitv: must bo a cog loose in the natural or civil functions of society. There ought to be an equivalent of reciprocity. As things are, it's all lop sided. An oflice needs and demands only one man a good one. On the other hand, how many men need and want that oHlce? There are only two solutions to this problem: multiply the oflices or kill o(T the would-be's. The iirst would make "enormous taxes; the latter would crowd the graveyards. It appears that General Wood would not kick if the (. O. 1'. should give him Hie vice presidential nomination Alas his hopes are vain. All republi can presidents, since the war, have been military men, and tho civilian part of the country ought to, at least, have the tail on the kite. If none but generals are to have high odices, then war will become a necessity as the hot bed out of which tliese generals may be taken to plant In ofiicial places. Did that congressman, who intro duced the resolution which is to lift the scalp of the Standard Oil Co., mean it for a dust cloud to blind the people? If so, he is a capital dust raiser. If the party in power could and would wake up to Its opportunity and go after the scalps of monopolies In dead earnest no mere war whoops and no body hurt it would sweep the country next November. Mugwumps are most feared by demagogues. The men who speak, write, act or vote their convictions re gardless of party are the people of liberty. As long as men are so blinded by party prejudice or so bound by party ties that they can be driven like dumb cattle, bad and selfish men may rule. It's the independent voter, the man who thinks, reasons, and then acts for himself, who alone can have power to break this dangerous combination. When this nation took possession of Porto llico, how cordially, yea en thusiastically the people of that island welcomed us and our rule. We.then made certain pledges, both stipulated and implied, which bound us by the honor of the nation. It now remains to be seen whether we have the honor to redeem them. We are not keeping our eye on Con gressman Weeks of late. Our contem poraries are doing that. It seems that some of them are awfully afraid he wont strike for their blowing. Per haps Hon. Weeks wants to do both his own blowing and striking, and .all this effort to run a congressman is a woeful wasto of wind. A CoxciUEssMAX's vote counts. If ho votes on the wrong side of a meas ure, he spends the rest of his life giving reasons for his vote. A vote on the wrong side may put him in a hole out of which there may be no convenient crack through which to crawl. There is one great trouble, an old chronic one, about all political reforms. The men or the combinations of men most needing reform have barrels. If some genius will only invent a cam paign which can be run without bar rels, the problem would be solved. Official constituency is a queer el ement, or a compound of elements. What a backing it makes when a poli tician can lean solidly against it. Hut horrors! when it gets in front of him and he must face it. It is easier to face a mad bull. Nothing can be a more sorrowful sight than a stranded politician. And lo! Tho hulls which political waves have turned bottom-up to bleach and rot upon the beach, never again to set i ail and never again cast anchor in snug harbors. We have been wondering what ailed tho weather of late? Put it's all plain now. The government has put a new man at the head, and of course he's a new hand at the business and we ex cuse him for the bad lot sent the past few days. Theoretically there is much said about facing the storm and all that kind of stuff. Put in political practice there is vastly more trimming and tacking; yea. scudding before the wind than facing it. The country press of the middle we6t and the Mississippi valley are al most solidly in favor of free trade with Porto Pico. The country press is the voice of the people as nearly as that can be heard. We may poke fun at that little Porto ltican potatoe patch, but just now it looks as though that same patch was in a fair way of producing more cam paign thunder than all the rest of the country. It is wonderful how tightly the aver age politician presses the receiver to his lug these days. It's campaign year and he wants to know what the people are saying. cents cents cents cents cents per yard 10-15 LATEST EFFECTS cents cents cents A Wonderful Man. Never before in the history of Yule have such wonderful things been per formed. Prof. L. It. Taylor is aston ishing everyone by his skill in curing all manner of disease. He is proving by the wonderful things he is doing in our midst that this is no idle boast; the blind are made to see; the deaf to hear; the lame to walk. His very presence seems to bring ease to his patients. Only last Friday night Prof. Taylor was called to see the wife of one of our most respected citizens, Mrs. Eber Ilarnden, who was sullering the most excruciating pain caused by a swelling iu her ankle. Her cries could bo heard on the street, but as soon as Prof. Tay lor placed his hands on her, she was easy, and all the pain left her. For two weeks she had beeu in dreadful suffering with the pain, and in less than one minute Prof. Taylor relieved her and she was quietly sleeping and is now able to attend, to her house hold duties as usual.
