The war In South Africa is produc tit o of the greatest curiosities that na re ever com under tho notice of the Br Itish soldiers. One of the latest re- pa rts from the scene states that the ela lple-mlnded British soldiers have mil itaken troops of ostriches for bands of .Boers and bands of Boers for troops at ostriches. In some cases tho os triches have made friends with the sDldlevs. Ono of the best known cor rtV3pondents at the front, who was -wfth General Methuen at tho Modder titer, reports this remarkable Inci dent: "While I ranged the valley or plain with my glasses something slip ped and tumbled heavily over the loose stows behind me. I turned, thinking to dodge or help a stumbling man and found' myself staring Into tho great brown eyes of an ostrich six feet tall and uith legs almost as thick as and longer than my own. 'lie came up hero some days ago said a soldier, 'and he always stays here now. We feed him and fool with him, and he seems very happy The ostrich stalked past me and took a position between the major and the captain, where after appearing to observe that they were very busy scanning the landscape, he, too, stared at the plain and remained erect and watchful, the highest typo of a sentry In appearance. He marred this fine effect for just a moment by seizing aad swallowing a box of safety matches. After that he continued his sentry duty with satisfaction in hl3 eyes The ostrich Is a great figure In public life In South Africa. He i3 a source of wealth and often a friend and companion. He is a valuable sub stitute for a watch dog. He can kick a horse to death and is, therefore, very formidable to burglars. He eats with relish thlng3 that would poison the strongest goat that ever lived. New York Journal. INDIGO IN COLONIAL TIMES. Do You Want TO 23"0"2 A.1TT OX" THE arox:LiO"WiiTGr o-oods? T.ya Curtains. It Wat Looked Upon aa a Sort of Car remt Coin, The colonial ladles were great gar deners, and the hours they passed with their fruits and flowers must have been moments of much pleasure in their busy lives, says Longman's Magazine. The most famous of these ladles was he daughter of George Lucas.a planter of Carolina, and at the same time governor of Antigua, at which place he appears to have resided, leaving Mlsa Eliza at home. From Antigua ho sent her all sorts of tropical seeds of fruit3 and flowers, to try if any would take kincUy to the soli of Carolina. Eliza observed certain hopeful signs with re gard to the indigo and undismayed by repeated accidents to the young plants, at length obtained a good crop. Gov. Lucas was so delighted at this un looked for success that ho sent over an Englishman to tench Eliza the whole process of indigo working. The Eng lishman, bearing gifts, seems to have been a rather sly and tricky sort of person, but when did England ever get the better of America? The youth ful Miss Lucas saw through the Eng lishman's dodges, (his name was Crom well), and "finally obtained a success ful knowledge and application of tho complex and annoying methods of ex tracting indigo." A bounty of Cd a pound encouraged the planting, and through its profits more children were Bent ove." from Carolina to be educated at home than from all the colonies put together. Indigo was looked upon at last as a sort of current coin, and it i3 on record that when a little boy was sent to school at Philadelphia, ho took with him a wagon of indigo to pay his expenses. A Corlons Monument. A curious monument has been dis covered in the dense undergrowth of the so-called Brandhai, in the Upper Harz. It is a granite block about seven feet high, resting on a stone pedestal, and on en iron tablet attached to it is the following inscription: "Here, in the year 1747, the first trials were made with the cultivation of the pota to." The German peasant of the timo did not take kindly to the potato plant on its Introduction to the country. It had, however, a great friend in the king, Frederick II., who was convinced of its value, but who was obliged to use forcible measures to get the people of Pomeranla and Silesia to plant the bulb. The action of the Harzer's In voluntarily adopting the plant was evidently thought worthy of a memorial. The Davis Machine Go., Chicago. Babv I lj ItSitjlfi to select from. '$3.50 UP. A good price has been "sot on their heads." The plague Is raging, chiefly in Osaka, where It got a good start In the fac tories; but Tokio, Yokohama and other places are adopting strict precaution ary measures. English Military Negligence, The following letter has been re ceived by the editor of London Truth: "Sir: It is notorious that orders have been Issued to the Boer marksmen to pick off the officers of the British army. I happened to be at Southamp ton last week when a largo body of men was being shipped for South Afri ca and I cannot describe tho astonish ment which it caused mo to perceive that the officers wore clean shirts and had washed th9lr faces. I contend that all distinctive marks of superior rank should be removed unless we aro to risk unnecessarily the lives of our officers' Now is the proper timo to start your spring advertising. The warlike poets eing about the man behind the guns; tho funny fellows tell us of tho man behind the pun; but the gunning and tho punning never starts a fellow running, like the ogre go Sa tanical the man behind the dun. It lias taken front rank before tho dreaded snail pox, scarlets fever, diphtheria, etc., In that its fatalities outnumber those of all other forms of disease. During tho seasons when tho grip is prevalent, every man, woman and child is exposed to its awful ravages. The atmosphere is everywhere thor oughly impregnated with tho deadly germs. It is contagious as well as infectious, and may be contracted by one person from another or taken into the system in myriads of mi crobes through inhalation. Itstrikc3 straight to tho very foundation upon which life exists the nerves and tears asunder tho vital framework in remarkably short timo. To ward off attacks of LaGrippc, or to fight the disease during its pro gress, the proper medicine to use is Dr. Miles' Nervine. Tfcls famous remedy quickly eradicates tho germs and overcomes the depressing effects of the disease. It quiets and soothes tho nerves, invigorates the appetite and creates new life and vigor. It increases the nerve force and vital power, builds up the resistive strength and prevents such terrible after effects as pneumonia, heart failure, nervous prostration and in sanity, by completely restoring the body to a healthy condition. "Having suffered for about two years with a peculiar nervous trouble, my wife's health had become greatly run down and she fell an easy victim to LaGrippe. She awoke in the morning feeling chilly and cold with oc casional hot flashes. She ached all over, was very nervous and uneasy and bad heavy pains in the back of her head and under shoulder blades. By noon she was so bad that she was almost delirious and it was then that I commenced giving her Dr. Miles Nervine. She felt the effect of the raediciao inside of an hour, and by evening sha was quieted so that, after taking a full dose, sht retired and slept soundly all night Tht next morning she could not tell that she had had the grip. This cure seems almost too rapid to be true, but it is a fact, and we think if she had taken the Nervine before the attack It would never have come on, Since then she has taken eight bottles of Dr. Miles' Nervine and the nervous troubla has entirely disappeared."
