It might not be best for this country

are certain it would not be best for the

son was president just now. All the
same, we cannot help wondering what
Old Hickory would say to the Sublime
Porte in his dillydallying-shillyshally
ing method of adjusting our indemnity
claim for the mission property belong
ing to American citizens destroyed in
the Tuakish riots. He would say "Jiy
the Eternal" so loudly as to wake the
Sultan from his afternoon nap.
The emoluments of the dog warden
office are many. To begin with, he will
have the 25 per cent for collecting the
dog tax. Tor each delinquent dog he
shoots he will get a whole big dollar
when he catches the dog. He is likely
to get the ill will of many, perhaps his
nearest neighbors; and he is dead sure
to have a troublesome crop of litiga
tions grow up on the graves of dead
dogs. He must tramp for the tax; and
the tagless dogs will not rush in droves
to his ollice to be shot.
Despeuate diseases require desper
ate remedies. An extra session of the
Michigan legislature is that kind of a
remedy; but if Pingree can run the risk
of Ingham county's grand jury gob
bling up the boys, he had better call
them together long enough to repeal
the dog warden law. A ten minute ses
sion will do the work, for there will bo
no debate and every member will vote
to repeal, excepting the framer of the
law and he'll be at home sick.
Thomas Nichols, late drain com
missioner of Sanilac county, and many
years a populist and bitter opposer of
the g. o. p., has met with a change of
heart, lie is out in an open letter an
nouncing his return to republicanism
and its fold. While welcoming tho
prodigal home, vp cannot help wonder

If the pending treaty between Costa
Rica, Nicaragua and this country is
ratified, it will give the U. S. a strip of
land ten miles wide extending from
ocean to ocean. This will not be the
canal, but it will be the ground in
which Uncle Sam can dig it, and his
