The so called gold democrats have
our sympathy in their efforts to swal
low the JJilly Uryan pills.
Our money and our Hag should both
lloat at par, and both mean the nation's
honor the world 'round.
The representatives of South Africa
Republics who are now in this country,
have already run up against the red
tape line. They are given to under
stand right at the start that this nation
will not interfere officially with the
war in their country. On the other
hand, so long as they do not tread on
the spots encircled by these tape lines,
they are welcome to roam the broad
land; speak .anywhere; hold mass meet
ings; and publish their views broad
cast. It's queer. What would be
wrong officially is right socially, or even
morally. The reason for this is plain

son of them carries concealed votes in
their pockets.
While all the noise made by the array
of aspirants to the governorship of
Michigan on the republican side, the
silence and funeral whisperings in the
democratic camp are quite significant.
It may mean just a common funeral, or
it may mean there's a live man in the
rouch . box and they dont want it
known.
If there isn't some warm politics in
.Sanilac County this fall, then the num
ber of candidates for office has nothing
to do with thermal conditions. Al
ready there are six to eight aspirants
to each of the several offices to be filled
at the next election, and numerous pre
cincts are yet unheard from.
It's only a little over three weeks to
the g. o. p. national convention, and
the whole sky looks McKinleyish. The
man who can at this late date defeat
the renoinination, will have to bo a first
class political cyclone maker.
The doctrino of a high protective tar
iff is rapidly taking root and bearing
fruit in (Jermany. It's a good doctrine
for us, and we are glad our Teutonic
cousins are coming under the shelter
of the same great truth.
Sentiment and sympathy may be
slippery stuff to stand upon; but more
men have slid into office on a track
greased with this compound than those
using oil made of solid facts.
There are two classes of public offi
cers; ono whom the people must catch
and compel them to serve a small one;
and those who slip in of their own free
will and accord.

growing rather scarce of late.
Should Not Be Used.
An eastern firm has issued a circular
letter cautioning wool growers not to
use sisal grass to bind up their lleeces.
They say that with the exercise of the
utmost care in the removal of this
twine from the lleeces some fibres are
liable to adhere to the wool and follow
it through the various processes with
out discovery until the goods are dyed,
when every strand shows plainly on the
surface. This leads not only to vexa
tious delays, but also serious claims
and cancellations.
Some manufacturers refuse to buy
wool in which there is more or less of this
twine, and others will only do so with
the privilege of rejecting the lleeces
so tied. It may readily be seen that
great trouble is occasioned by the use
of this twine. Many localities have al
ready abandoned the use of it, but in
Michigan the custom largely prevails,
and the fact that wool is from this
state is often sufficient to create a prej
udice against it in some manufacturers'
minds, even before examination.
The difference to the grower between
the grass twine and the smooth hard
kind, which should properly be used,
must be very trilling and certainly can
bear no relation whatever to the many
losses it causes the consumer. Mar

Tent ia Wm. Campbell, and the one
from Speaker is Andrew Wark.
The Yale K. O. T. M. Tent expect to
celebrate the anniversary of the found
ing of the order on June 10th. Invita
tions are being sent out to all contigu
ous tents. A royal welcome will await
all who come, and a pood turnout is ex
pected, as also the best of social times
may be anticipated. A more extended
notice will appear next week.
The better half of us is Yankee, but
all the rest is Scotch; and as a Scotch
man we know good tea when we taste
it. Wo have tried many kinds; but
more recently have tested the I'andi
