The rain fall was scant, but like the man who looked up to Lazarus from the midst of similar eur roundings, we felt that a few drops of water were yery desirable. Scarce a day passes when one or more aro not prowling about the hay sheds and freight yards. Residents of that region are much annoyed by their frequent calls. Floyd surely will make a success of something soon, for he is persistent in his efforts. He has the art of printing and the science of watch-making to perfection, and it would seem by his being commissioned a priyate detective there certainly must come "some startling disclosures" in whatever case he may handle. The promised Premium list for the 1900 Yale Fair is now completed and in the hands of Secretary Herbert, and copies of the same can be had by call ing at his office. The Fair is now in the bands of its friends. What it will or will not be, depends largely upon their action. Much can be accomplished by all, but much can be done just now by the merchants of Yale speaking to pa trons about it. Ask them to attend the Fair, prepare exhibits, and pass the good word among their neighbors. In this respect merchants haye the advan tage in more convenient opportunities to work for the fair. Farmers are iso lated, see but little of each other at this busy season, while the tradesman has a chance eyery day. The Ladies' Aid of the M. P. church at West Brockway held a social on Thursday evening A Fins Quilt August 2nd. There was a tine time and Was Presented, turnout, and f 16.81 realized in cash. But this was only a part of the program so to speak, there was a sideshow. The good ladies out there know that these warm days will cease by and by, and sleeping out doors will not then be all the rage, in view of these cold corner ed contingencies coming, the sisters presented Pastor Keith and wife with very substantial and beautiful quilt It isof the block-work monumental pat em, of pink and white color, and very delicately lined. What the parson and wife prize more highly than the quilt is the love and good will expressed in it by the donors, whose names are so neatly engrossed upon the blocks by Mrs. uiark wctonneii. The old phrases, "Regular August weather;" "As hot as dog days;" or "As hot as an oven,' A Cola wave all seemed to suit th weather these days Is Coming. We are now forced to believe in 'dog days We long doubted; but now know that if it isn't dog days, it's something just as trying. Sometime last Saturday night the dog star must have come in conjunction, collision, or contlict with some other planet. Atanyrate we do know it was hot on Sunday, and has since kept so. We actually saw potatoes belled, eggs fried, meat roasted, and tons of ice-cream were melted. But a cold waye is coming. The dog star will have retired to winter quarters long ere uryan is elected, lhe time draweth nigh when another star will rule, and Jack Frost will send shivers up and down our spines, or creep up our pant legs. Then we'll look into our winter wardrobesand empty wallets and think dog days are not such bad times aiter all. Some time ago we had a fit of guess ing as to what the 1900 census would officially say lale s Yale b Total total population was liut guessing is no Population 1,125. good ; for we know now that we missed the mark by being just 188 points too high, l his time we made sure of it by the epirit-dream method, we dream ed ourself in a disembodied state the night was hot and favorable to that state and in the spirit we passed to the bedchamber of a clerk in the cen sus bureau at Washington, lhe poor fellow's brain was weary with work, and in his sleep he dreamed and talk ed, and we listened. At last he came to Yale, it being in the y's was last in the list; and he uttered distinctly Yale, total population 1,125." Then he sighed heavily, turned upon his side and snored. The night was very hot, but realizing that our dream might be an item of exclusive mention, we rose in spirit and took our flight back to 1 ale. This dream is real and the figures reliable.
