C0MPL1S0RY SCHOOL LAW. Not many people understand that the last legislature passed a compulsory educational law, which becomes effec tive with the opening of school, and in order that its provisions should be thoroughly understood we give a sum mary of its most important features below: Fikst All children between seven and lil'teen years, with certain exemp tions, must attend school, such attend ance shall be consecutive for live days each week ami shall continue through out the school year. Slconi The director of each school district shall at the opening of school furnish the teacher with a copy of the last census list of his district. Tiiikii The teacher shall be requir ed to report to the county commission er of schools all those cases where the law is not complied with, giving name and address of parent or guardian and the name and age of pupils under their charge not meeting the requirements of the law. Foukth The commissioner upon being notified by the teacher shall be required to notify the deputy sheriff, who shall within twenty-four hours give notice in person or by registered letter, to such parents or legal guar dians to have their pupils present them selves at school the following Monday morning. In case such notice is not complied with the deputy sheriff shall enter complaint and on conviction the penalty shall be no less than !?.").(K) nor more than s?" or by imprisonment no less than two days or more than ninety or both of these penalties at tho dis cretion of the court. Fifth Exemptions from the pro visions of this law are as follows: (a) Those children attendingparoch ial schools in which such branches are taught as are usually taught in our public schools. (b) Those physically unable to attend (c) Children over fourteen years of age whose services are essential to tho support of their parents. For a month the Salvation Army in Port Huron will hold a rummage sale and harvest bazaar. Fifteen graduates of the Armada high school are away attending differ ent colleges in the state. The Waverly House at Armada is now owned by David Knickerbocker and (ius Lutz who purchased it from Frank Deer. Rat biscuit seems to be a dangerous stuff to have around. A Croswell child ate some the other day and nearly ended her life. The funeral of Calvin Plimpton was held from undertaking rooms in Port Huron recently and he was buried at the county s expense. North Uranch has a popular minister in the person of Rev. R. Crosby, pastor ot the M. J. church, who has just been returned to that town for the ninth year. Somebody rises up to remark in the Port Huron Times that tho roads of St. Clair County are as miserable a lot of country roads as can be produced anywhere. Thomas L. Simpson begins suit in the circuit court against tho Fort ilu ron City Electric railway for !?o,(K)0 claiming that he received injuries by ueing thrown irom a car. in accordance with the new Jaw a juvenile court will be established in St. Clair county. The circuit court com missioners are to have jurisdiction in ail juvenile uisoruerly cases. Charles Meleney, an escaped lunatic from the l'ontiac asylum is at large in St. Clair county, and said to be around Rrockway. Four deputy sheriffs aro scouring tho country alter him. Twelve year old Roy Johnson of Port Huron is provided with a conven ient stomach which doesn't bother him in the least when he swallows a marble and a short time after, a Canadian nickel. Around the big shade trees in front or the Cadillac hotel at St. Clair grows beautiful woodbine, or did grow until some low, malicious person cut it all down and chopped the roots off close to the ground. The marshal of St. Clair confiscated about fifteen sling shots from the school boys, because one boy was shot in the back of his head by a sling shot and it was deemed advisable to take them all away from the boys. Three Marlctte boys, Frank, John and Lloyd Hume, have just arrived home after a six-year stay in Alaska, where after each making a good com petence at mining, they sold out their interests and came home to Michigan to live. The St. Clair county Farmers' picnic held in Smith.s ('reek last week was successful. The following officers were elected for tho ensuing year. ' Pres. Dion Reach, St. Clair; Sec. and Treas., James Fisher of Smith Creek. Com mittees were also appointed. Michael Nehman, tho Capac under taker, has been arrested, charged with slandering Otto Kress the Memphis undertaker. Kress has started suit in tho circuit court..
