Text of t Lviaon, Kcb.'vlll, S-lfl. lke xl, 2S Commentary l'repa by Itcv. D. M. S(rna. ' Copyright, Xsi. by Armrictn Prrsa Anwiatlun.) This lesson should be one of special Interest to all who are privileged to attend Bible studies or conferences and au Inducement to others to do bo. It Is an' account tH? a seven days confer ence for Bible reading, at which the book of the law of Moses was read In tho hearing of all ie men and women who assembled ironi morning until midday (verse 1-3, IS). Later In tho came month, on the 124 tli day, the peo ple gathered again and read In the book of the law of the Lord their GoJ one-fourth part of the day, and anoth er fourth part they confessed and wor shiped the Lord their God (chapter Ix, 1-3). It was a time of a real work of the Spirit of Gexl among them, result ing In obedience and In separation from tin. An account of the seventh month, with Its feasts of trumpets, atonement and tabernacles, Is found In Lev. xxlil aud 6houId be carefully studied in con nection with this lesson. The three might be summarized in such words as these: The proclamation of the forgiveness of s!us causing great Joy to all the people. See Acts xili. .".3. 30. for a good comment. Verso 8 of our lesson Is, I think, tho best definition of good reading that I have ever seen. I do net know why It might not bo applied to'singing also, especially to ol or duet singing, or such like. But, if so applied, what about the singing that docs not come under this bead? Well, away with It all. Lot it perish, for there Is no placo for It in the worilp of God. As to both the law ami the prophets, God took care that the words should be very plainly written, so that thoe who read might rvn to obey (DeuL xxvli, 8; Ilib. II, 2). The necessity of understanding the word and how to understand it may bo learned from Matt xlil. ID. CI; xvl. 0, 11; Acts ri'I, 30; Ileb. xl. 3; I v. 2. What shall bo said of tho sermons and essays which few of tho bearers can understand, but which are supposed to Indicate su perior talent on the part of the speaker? Sad It Is, but true, that there are many who, like the old Scotch woman, consider such efforts very learned simply because they would not presume to understand them. The word of God Is quick and power ful, discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart (neb. Iv, 12); hence the people mourned and wept as by the wortls of the book they saw their sin before God (verse 9). The Spirit of God convinces of sin and of right eousness and of judgment (John xvL 8-11), and without conviction of Bin and penitence there can be no real blessing. The feast of trumpets on the first day of the month was always accompanied by an offering made by fir? (Lev. 23 2o), and all offerings pointed to Him who was made sin for us, through whom alone there is forgiveness. The people, being penitent, are therefore exhorted to rejoice because of the re demption provided, and, being made to understand, they did rejoiee and made great mirth and helped to make others glad (10-12). He who said, "I delight to do Thy will. O my God" (l's. xl, 8; Ileb. x, 7), Bald to Ills disciples the night before He suffered : "These things havo I spoken unto you' that my joy might remain In you and that your joy might be full." "Ask and ye shall re ceive, that your Joy might be full" (John xr, 11; xvl, 21). Tho Joy cf tho Lord is associated with the salvation of Ills people In Isa. xli, 2, 3; xxxv, 1, 4; 1x1,10. See also the Joy In Luke xr. There are many In our day who pro fess to be the redeemed of the Lord whether they are or not tho Lore! knows who teem to think that real happiness Is Inconsistent with what they call religion and endeavor to find authority fir their gloominess In tho words, "Blessed nro they that mourn," not noticing the context., There nro' also some who really do receive and trust In the Lord Jesus and III grea atonement, but they do r.ot pccm to find tho Joy of the Lord notwithstand ing Rom. xv, 13; v, 1, 2; vili, IS; I Pet. l-8unnel many other similar words. 1 It must be because of homo failure on their part to become occupied with Jesus only and rest on His word. , As tho pooplc beard tho word out of tho baric from day t day they learned that thoy were cjcpteteJ t ke'-p tho Feast of Tabornacle (Lev. -xxiil. .",."-?::). nuil they did s fy.v the first fir"- Kinoo tho ia.v. of jv-hva (verso 171. avd th"o v.t very g-'-'-t p.hir'oa-.
