FOH several years past it has been the custom of JJean Elevators to lend farmers new bean hairs in which, to market their beans and other grains. The wholesale jobbers to whom we ship beans have objected so hard ou accepting second handed bags that the Michigan Bean Jobbers' Association found that it was necessary to instruct its members to ship beans only in brand new Lags. This has a tendency to stop the loaning ol new bags. Further than this, we find that the accommodation ha been abused to so great an extent that every eleva tor man finds at the end of the Beason a very large shortage in his bag account. lie finds further that he has on hand hundreds of seoond hand and torn bags which have to be patched, requiring further expense. Taking these items in connection with the time it takes to clean up these bags, we think there is hardly an elevator man who is not subjected to an expense of from .$300 to .$800 per year on this one item. When this practice started the farmers were not prosperous aud could not afford to buy their own bags, but there seems to be a tendency among farmers to feel that they are well abl to supply their requirements and the elevator man linds that as competi tion is stronger, he can hardly afford to stand this loss each year. We have therefore felt obliged to adopt the uniform rule that we will lend no bags. On the other hand, we will supply bags at exactly cost. From our posi tion, we trust our farmer friends will see the justice of this step. We believe that the abuse of the courtesy ex tended has been the cause of this action and we regret very much that we are obliged to take this position.
